Make it three straight wins for the Detroit Lions, and Sunday's 42-24 victory over the Carolina Panthers might just be their most impressive to date.
All three phases contributed to the win as the Lions improved to 4-1 on the season. Detroit's defense forced three takeaways, the offense scored 21 points off those turnovers and six touchdowns total, and Detroit's special teams had another perfect outing.
Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes in the contest, two to rookie tight end Sam LaPorta, which is just the fifth time in franchise history a rookie tight end has logged a multi-touchdown game. Goff also rushed for a 1-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes in the first half and ran for another score in the fourth quarter, lifting the Lions to a 42-24 victory over the winless Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
Detroit scored at least 27 points in consecutive first halves for the first time in franchise history and topped 20 points in a team-record 14th game in a row, despite missing receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
“These guys who have been asked to step up are making plays,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “We’re not getting any drop-off."
The NFC North-leading Lions (4-1) are alone atop the division in October or later for the first time since 2016 and have won 12 of their last 15 games dating to last season.
After first-down completions to Kalif Raymond and Marvin Jones, Montgomery burst free, and scampered 42 yards into the end zone, sending Ford Field into a frenzy.
The veteran running back produced his sixth rushing score of the 2023 season, which sets a new team record for the most rushing touchdowns a Lions player has had in their first four games with the organization.
With Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs both out, Goff spread the ball around. Seven different Lions players caught two passes or more.
The Lions set a new franchise record. This is the 14th straight game that Detroit has put up 20 points or more.
Detroit led 28-10 at halftime and ended up defeating the Panthers, 42-24.
The Lions will look to carry their momentum into next Sunday when Detroit will play at Tampa Bay.
