Arizona star quarterback Jayden de Laura will be a game-time decision against No. 9 USC on Saturday night but is "unlikely" to play, a source told ESPN.
After suffering a significant lower leg injury against Stanford in Week 4, de Laura missed Arizona's 31-24 loss to No. 7 Washington last week. A source told ESPN that Arizona's game at Washington State on Oct. 14 would be a more realistic target for de Laura to return.
Wildcats tailback Michael Wiley missed the Washington game as well with a lower leg injury and will also be a game-time decision Saturday night.
Arizona is expected to start redshirt freshman Noah Fifita again at quarterback. He played well against Washington, going 27-for-39 for 232 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. At tailback, Jonah Coleman projects to start if Wiley is unable to go.
Fifita filled in for injured starting quarterback Jayden de Laura for the second consecutive week against another top-10 opponent. He finished the night 25 of 35 for 303 yards and five touchdowns. Arizona finished with 506 yards of total offense as the defensive woes continue for the Trojans.
The Wildcats are building momentum in the third season of Jedd Fisch's tenure. Arizona played No. 7 Washington closer than any Huskies opponent so far in Fifita's first start last weekend. He helped Arizona nearly overcome an 18-point deficit before the 'Cats fell 31-24 in front of the home crowd in Tucson, Arizona.
Except in a play that’ll live in infamy in this 2023 USC season, a play so unbelievable it seemed to take a few seconds to set in, a field-goal snap went slightly high to punter Will Rose. And for a moment, time froze, Rose seeming unsure of whether to place the snap down or try and run, eventually placing it and kicker Denis Lynch completely whiffing — bringing an already-grueling game to overtime.
But as USC’s defense broke, completely, as all momentum dictated the Trojans simply were destined to lose this game on pure bad omen, Williams would not quit. Back and forth they dueled, Williams scrambling for an 18-yard score only to be matched by a quick bomb from Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita, Arizona coming back and scoring again before Austin Jones matched them with an 11-yard touchdown run.
Williams darted in for a two-point conversion in the third overtime, Arizona’s two-point conversion was swallowed by USC’s defense, and Williams went bounding up the tunnel in glee after one of the craziest collegiate football games a rocking crowd at the Coliseum had ever seen.
