The Patriots got their first win of the 2023 season on Sunday, knocking off the New York Jets by a score of 15-10 to improve their record to 1-2 with a badly needed victory. Veteran tight end Pharoah Brown was one of the heroes of the game with an explosive 58-yard touchdown score, while Mac Jones and the rest of the offense did enough to put the Jets away with some timely throws and runs.
The Pats defense deserves a large chunk of the credit as they contained Zach Wilson and the Jets offense for the majority of the game, providing just enough field position and timely stops to allow their offense to pull away. The Jets offense finally put together a touchdown scoring drive in the fourth quarter, but the New England's defense was able to regroup and get the final stops necessary to preserve the win.
The Pats held a 10-3 lead at halftime, outgaining the Jets 216 to 39. The third down issues that plagued the Jets last week in Dallas reappeared as the visitors went 6 of 10 in the opening 30 minutes and the Jets were held to 1 of 8. New England finished 8 of 19 while the Jets ended up 2 of 14 (12.5%), the Green & White's lowest conversion rate since 2018.
The missed PI came two plays before a missed 57-yard field goal, and the missed personal foul led to a punt instead of having a first down in field-goal range. The Patriots likely would have had a few more points to show for their efforts if Bill Vinovich's crew had done its job. I'll give you that.
After a defensive stop, the Jets faced third-and-10 from their own 10 and Wilson ran for a first down — but it was erased by a holding penalty by rookie guard Joe Tippmann. Judon brought down Wilson in the end zone on the next play to make it 15-10.
Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was 15-of-29 for 201 yards and a touchdown while Ezekiel Elliott and Rhamondre Stevenson combined to run 35 times for 139 yards on a wet day in New Jersey. Judon had a pair of sacks and rookie kicker Chad Ryland hit a 51-yard field goal in the second half after missing a pair of long kicks in the first half.
That field goal was all the points the Patriots offense generated in the final 30 minutes, but it turned out to be enough. New England will try for another win in Dallas next weekend while the Jets will play host to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
