In Hulu's new sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You, now streaming, Kaitlyn Dever spends nearly an hour and a half battling aliens—and barely says a word.
The Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated Dever stars as Brynn, a nervous homebody who's awoken one night by the sound of extraterrestrial beings breaking into her house. Brynn's fight to defend herself against the "Greys" gets going just minutes into movie, but as the film progresses, we learn through some dialogue-free interactions with her fellow townspeople that Brynn is harboring a traumatic secret.
The greatest strength of “No One Will Save You” is the creativity in its foundational decision-making. The entire film contains one line of discernable dialogue, and is built on an incredible use of sound instead. The first act concerns the invasion itself, building excellent tension with diegetic sound. As Brynn quietly sneaks through her home trying to evade the alien, quotidian sounds like dial tones, and a sneaky creak in the floorboards tighten your chest.
There's not much new under the sun when it comes to sci-fi films centered around UFOs/UAP and alien abductions, although director Jordan Peele did a fine job with last year's "Nope" by giving the subgenre an unexpected cryptozoological twist.
Today, another fresh take on alien invasions lands as the non-traditional, atmospheric project from writer/director Brian Duffield titled "No One Will Save You" arrives exclusively at Hulu. The film offers an exhilarating examination of alien invasions as a resourceful girl faces off against serious extraterrestrial threats and has virtually no dialogue.
In the film, Brynn is a loner due to a gradually revealed incident in her past that makes her feel like an outcast in her community — and even if people knew that aliens were on the loose, neighbors may not be inclined to help her. This is underlined during a tense scene in which Brynn goes to town to try to warn the police about the extraterrestrials, but has an unexpected confrontation with people from her past. Duffield said the complex emotions and backstory made it the scene that was toughest to conceptualize and shoot with limited dialogue.
"No One Will Save You" is a relentless alien horror thriller where Dever plays a young woman with a very complex and interesting back story. Five minutes into the movie, aliens show up wanting to abduct her and she's not into that idea," said Duffield. "It's a nightmare for her, so the rest of the movie is her kind of trying to understand what they want and trying to survive and being extremely outmatched against a higher species."
Duffield admits the biggest part of his job on a movie like this is finding the right person to play your main character. He thinks Dever completely fits the bill.
"That's so much of my job is done when you have someone that talented and someone so lovely, who is not a headache, that's so great," said Duffield. "What was also exciting was she'd never done anything this physical before. She's on wires, doing stunts, running...I think she was really hungry for that kind of adventure."
