Taylor Swift and Stray Kids within VMAs winners list

The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards started and ended with Taylor Swift.

In between the most-awarded artist of the night receiving the best pop award during NSYNC's surprise reunion and winning video of the year, the Tuesday broadcast celebrated artists from around the globe, including Shakira, Peso Pluma, Stray Kids, Rema and Anitta.

Nicki Minaj hosted and performed during the show, which took place at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.  was honored with the Global Icon Award after performing hits from throughout his 30-year career with his children on stage with him. The "She Wolf" was back and better than ever as Shakira accepted the Video Vanguard Award and gave a medley performance.

This year, Taylor Swift and SZA are the most nominated acts, with 11 and eight nominations, respectively. Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Future, Lil Wayne, Shakira, Diddy, and Doja Cat, among many others, will perform, and Nicki Minaj—who cohosted last year’s VMAs too—will emcee.

But while today the songs, music videos, and artists celebrated may look and sound a lot different than 40 years ago, one thing remains the same: The VMAs red carpet is still the place to be. From Lil’ Kim’s one-sleeve purple jumpsuit complete with nipple pasty in 1999 to Macy Gray reinventing self-promotion in a dress that read “My New Album Drops Sept. 18 2001” to Lady Gaga’s unanticipated meat dress by Franc Fernandez in 2010, you never know what to expect from the VMAs red carpet.

The most heated competition comes in the video of the year category, which is a battle between Doja ("Attention"), Cyrus ("Flowers"), Minaj ("Super Freaky Girl"), Rodrigo ("Vampire"), Sam Smith and Kim Petras ("Unholy"), SZA ("Kill Bill") and Swift ("Anti-Hero").

Meanwhile, artist of the year will go to either Doja, Swift, Minaj, Shakira, Karol G or Beyoncé.

In addition to the standard categories, Shakira will take home the video vanguard award, and Sean "Diddy" Combs will be honored with the global icon award — both of which recognize the musicians' decades-long, hit-filled careers.
