LSU's season-opening loss to Florida State 45-24

PRESSBEE -
LSUs season-opening loss to Florida State 45-24

LSU folded like a house of cards in the second half against No. 8 Florida State on Sunday night in Camping World Stadium with the Jordan Travis-Keon Coleman connection becoming too much for the Tigers' secondary.

Brian Kelly and Co. were outscored 31-7 in the second half with the Seminoles ultimately going on a 31-0 run to start the final two quarters, never looking back in their 45-24 victory against the Tigers.

But the cold truth is FSU whupped LSU at the lines of scrimmage, FSU quarterback Jordan Travis outplayed LSU’s Jayden Daniels, FSU's wide receivers outplayed LSU’s, and LSU’s secondary looked like the liability that Kelly had warned it might be.

LSU applied some pressure on Travis throughout the first half, but he enjoyed comfortable pockets after halftime, and he and standout wide receivers Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson blistered the Tigers.

The LSU Tigers’ 2023 campaign began with high expectations, but one game into the season, we have more questions than answers.

LSU led by three against Florida State at halftime in a top-10 matchup on Sunday night, but the Tigers allowed FSU to score 31 unanswered points to wrest control of the game and ultimately win it 45-24.

While first game jitters on both sides of the ball seemed to play a hand in countless first half mistakes, Florida State eventually pieced together the talent that it knew it had. LSU, however, did not.

Florida State outplayed LSU in every aspect of the game. The Seminoles’ defensive line applied consistent pressure on the Tigers. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels fell back into the pocket and cracks in the offensive line compelled unnecessary scrambles, oftentimes leading to Daniels throwing the ball away. Florida State ended the night with four sacks.

The Tigers ended the day with 113 yards on the ground which may look decent on paper, but two major breakaway runs by both Daniels and Josh Williams inflated these numbers significantly. LSU couldn’t get into a groove on the ground with the run-game mimicking last season in a big way.

Notre Dame transfer Logan Diggs didn’t play due to a “coach's decision”, per Brian Kelly with the Tigers rolling with Bradford, Cain and Williams as the primary backs.

Moving forward, it’s imperative this program utilizes the deep running back room in order to provide a balanced attack come SEC play.
