The death of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett is causing an uproar

The death of music and lifestyle icon Jimmy Buffett was not met with displays of dark clothing, weeping, or other elements of traditional mourning.

Of course it wasn't.

Fans memorialized the 76-year-old purveyor of laidback, beachside rock the proper way, by flocking to the Mayor of Margaritaville's eateries and raising their glasses.

Lee Jameson said she headed to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville at Universal CityWalk in Los Angeles County as soon as she heard on Saturday.

"We woke up, we heard the news, immediately got in the car, and headed straight to Margaritaville right when it opened," she said at the restaurant named for Buffett's hit song.

"It's 11 a.m. here, but it's five o'clock somewhere," she added in a reference to the duet Buffett recorded with singer Alan Jackson

A poet of paradise, Jimmy Buffett was an American music icon who inspired generations to step back and find the joy in life and in one another.   His witty, wistful songs celebrate a uniquely American cast of characters and seaside folkways, weaving together an unforgettable musical mix of country, folk, rock, pop, and calypso into something uniquely his own.   We had the honor to meet and get to know Jimmy over the years, and he was in life as he was performing on stage – full of goodwill and joy, using his gift to bring people together.

Buffett was inducted into the USM Alumni Hall of Fame in 2018. He was an honorary co-chair for the University’s fundraising campaign, Give Wing: The Campaign for Southern Miss, and was also a member of the USM Foundation Honor Club and life member of the Southern Miss Alumni Association.

“It's only fitting we recognize the legacies of Buffett and Taylor, whose contributions to American popular music are indeed significant. The story of their session at The Hub and what followed is a treasured part of the Southern Miss story,” said then University Historian Dr. Chester “Bo” Morgan about the placement of the marker.

ack at CityWalk, Buffett was honored by one of multiple toasts to his life and accomplishments.

“Jimmy Buffett was not just an artist he was a curator of vibes," the toast's organizer said. "It is 5 o’clock somewhere, everyone put their fins up and toast to the king."
