Over the weekend, Elton John, 76, was treated and then later released from the hospital after falling at his villa in Nice, France.
“Following a slip yesterday at his home in the south of France, Elton visited the local hospital as a precautionary measure,” a statement from John's representative shared with TODAY.com read. “Following checkups, he was immediately discharged this morning and (he is) now back at home and in good health.”
The minor accident comes two months after John delivered a stirring farewell performance at Glastonbury Festival in the U.K. The five-time Grammy winner played his final North American show last November at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
John previously underwent hip surgery after suffering a fall in 2021, which forced him to push back many of his tour dates.
It had begun in September 2018, and was originally intended to conclude in 2021, with John reasoning: “It’s time to come off the road so I can fully embrace the next important chapter of my life. I need to dedicate more time to raising my children.”
But the tour was first paused by the Covid-19 pandemic and then lengthened with further runs of dates. In all, he played 330 concerts, including a memorable headline set at Glastonbury festival, the tour’s setlist tailored to feature a stacked run of his biggest hits.
During the break from touring in the Covid lockdowns, he recorded The Lockdown Sessions, an album of remote or socially distanced collaborations with artists including Stevie Wonder, Lil Nas X, Stevie Nicks, Gorillaz and Metallica. Cold Heart, a song with Dua Lipa that interpolated elements of previous John hits, topped the charts in the UK and 12 other countries.
The performances marked Sir Elton's retirement from live touring, but the singer has not ruled out occasional one-off performances in the future.
He also recently gave evidence as a defence witness at Kevin Spacey's trial, which ultimately saw the actor cleared of sexual assault.
Since releasing his debut album in 1969, Sir Elton has become one of the UK's best-loved musicians, with hits including Tiny Dancer, I'm Still Standing, Your Song and Are You Ready For Love?
A film released in 2019, Rocketman, saw Taron Egerton portray the singer in the story of his life and career.
