Ahsoka Tano has had one of the biggest character arcs in all of Star Wars, both in-universe and out of it. When she was first introduced in The Clone Wars movie, the previously unnamed Padawan of Anakin Skywalker was essentially a walking death flag. (There was no sign of her in Revenge of the Sith, which didn’t bode well for her survivability, presumably.) The fan base’s reception of this perceived filler character was skeptical at best and outright heinous at worst (a sign of things to come for other female characters in Star Wars). And yet, she became not only one of the most complex and essential characters in the franchise but one of the most beloved, to the point where she not only survived Order 66, but became an important part of Rebels and even had a voice appearance in The Rise of Skywalker prior to a live-action debut in season two of The Mandalorian.
Set within the same timeframe as The Mandalorian, the events of Ahsoka take place several years after the fall of the Galactic Empire in The Return of the Jedi. This is a period of time when the New Republic, the democratic government formed by the Rebel Alliance following their victory against the Empire, retains only precarious control over the galaxy.
The premiere begins with Baylan Skoll (played by the late Ray Stevenson), a former Jedi who fell to the Dark Side, and his apprentice Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) deceptively boarding the New Republic ship where former Imperial Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) is being held prisoner. We last saw Morgan when she was being questioned by Ahsoka about the whereabouts of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen, who also voiced the character in Rebels) in The Mandalorian.
For her part, Ahsoka isn’t driven by power as much as she is by obligation. When Thrawn was banished into hyperspace, Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), a Jedi in training, sacrificed himself and was sucked through the galaxy as well. Since Ezra once saved her life, Ahsoka feels she owes him a debt. Like Morgan, Ahsoka has set her sights on uncovering the star map leading to Ezra and Thrawn’s location.
When news of Stevenson’s death broke in May, “Ahsoka” lead actor Rosario Dawson posted a tribute to her co-star on Instagram: “Gone too soon from this world. At a loss for words… just wanted to mark this moment and share your ever ready and present smile. Love you forever. Holding your family in my heart. #LegendsNeverDie.”
