Bleckley county sheriff resigns after admitting guilty

A Georgia sheriff has reportedly retired after admitting he groped an attorney and TV judge during a sheriff’s convention.

Kris Coody, the now-former sheriff of Bleckley County, pleaded guilty to sexual battery in Cobb County court on Monday, local CBS affiliate WMAZ reported. He acknowledged that he touched, without consent, the breast of Glenda Hatchett, host of the TV show “Judge Hatchett,” during a conversation at the hotel bar during the Georgia Sheriff’s Association winter conference.

Coody was sentenced to 12 months of probation, 40 hours of community service, a psychosexual evaluation and a $500 fine, the station reported. He must also complete an alcohol and drug course, which his lawyer reportedly says has already been done.

Cape says he doesn't want Coody's resignation to be a distraction.

"At that time, we all discussed it and moved forward and said hey we can't stop for these people," Cape said. "These people that work here, live here, pay taxes here, and have kids in schools here, they deserve us to do the best that we can."

William Conner also lives in Cochran. He hopes Cape can bring people together.

He has resigned as sheriff of Bleckley county effective Monday.

In a press conference this afternoon, judge Hattchet called out the governor Brian Kemp's office for not doing enough.

"For the governor's office to issue a statement saying they weren't going to do anything because he was not on duty is obscene and ludacris," said Hatchett.

She says she is grateful for all the support she has received.

"I am surrounded by so much support because I'm judge Hatchett but what about the women and men victims that who aren't and that's why I've dedicated so much of my life professionally as you know advocating," Judge Carl Bowser.

Judge Hatchett also emphasized that the judge gave Coody 3 opportunities to speak and apologized today and he did not.

Reports say Hatchett criticized Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp for not taking action against Coody after the incident occurred. Fox 5 reports Kemp’s office said Coody’s actions did not require “state law to take action.”
