De Gea became a free agent earlier this summer following the expiry of his Man Utd contract. The Spaniard had agreed terms over a new deal at Man Utd, which would have seen his wages significantly reduced. But Man Utd ended up pulling out of the contract talks and went on to make Andre Onana their new No.1 instead.
De Gea has since been looking for a new club. He has been offered the opportunity to go to Saudi Arabia on a lucrative contract. But he wants to keep playing at the highest level possible in Europe for a few more years before he considers such a transfer.
As of now, Bayern Munich has one fit keeper and a youth player as backup. That’s not going to be enough, but the Bavarians seem to have — allegedly — made their mind up and want to sign ex-Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea. His wage demands are a potential roadblock, however:
Real Madrid looked set to sign De Gea but manager Carlo Ancelotti was not keen on the former United ‘keeper and they decided to bring in Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan from Chelsea instead.
German champions Bayern Munich now want to sign De Gea but according to reports they face a key problem over a move – his wage demands are too high.
Also on the Bavarians’ list is Sevilla No. 1 Bono, who is worth around €20million.
Berger notes that De Gea earned €20m per year when at Old Trafford, which Bayern will be reluctant to pay.
According to reports prior to his Manchester United exit earlier this summer, De Gea had agreed a new contract on a reduced salary, only for the Red Devils to pull the offer to put even less money on the table.
This was the final nail in the coffin for De Gea, who is clearly holding out for a Champions League club.
Bayern had De Gea on their shortlist but decided to focus on Kepa Arrizabalaga who was at Chelsea FC and Geronimo Rulli from Ajax. However, Kepa has moved to Real Madrid and Rulli injured himself just before he was due to travel to Munich to get the deal done. Therefore, the bosses are circling around De Gea, but they want an answer soon.
