I have devoted most of my professional life to promoting fundamental reforms of our so-called justice system: 29 years at the Correctional Association of New York focused on improving conditions of confinement and closing prisons and jails in New York and, more recently, 12 years at the Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP) advocating exposing and ending abusive and racist NYPD practices. A hard lesson learned over 40 years is that as challenging as prison reform work is, it is nothing compared to the heavy political lifting needed to achieve real changes in daily policing practices.
