Thousands of Brits report problems with sending and receiving messages in WhatsApp

WhatsApp, the Meta-owned ubiquitous messaging app, was inaccessible to many users around the globe due to a “major disruption” earlier Wednesday. Tens of thousands of users reported issues sending and receiving messages on the social app, used by more than 2 billion users each month.

The outage started at around 1:15 p.m. Pacific time, according to user messages, and lasted about 40 to 50 minutes.

Users rushed to social media confused as to why they cannot use the instant messaging service, tweeting: "Is WhatsApp down?!' and 'Anyone else unable to send messages?". While those left angry at the problems fume "I have had enough of this app'" and "WhatsApp please fix these problems asap!"

Meta’s business website earlier said the outage had caused a “major disruption.” It’s unclear what caused the outage.

Thousands of WhatsApp users had their conversations interrupted by an outage at around 4pm, as messaging service users flocked to social media for advice.

Many panicked users reported frantically turning their mobile data on and off, or scrambling over to the wifi box, only to find out there was nothing untoward on their end.

One user summed up the group migration to Twitter: “Just came here to find out if WhatsApp is down… I got my answer.”

The company later added: "And we're back, happy chatting!

The website Downdetector has so far registered over 150,000 reports of outages on WhatsApp.

Downdetector also noticed an uptick in Instagram and Facebook outage reports.

Some users were glad for a period respite from WhatsApp.

Data recorded by the tracker Down for Everyone or Just Me indicated as of Wednesday afternoon that the outage had begun at roughly 4:15.

It's worth noting that comments posted on Downdetector suggested that many territories around the world had experienced an outage earlier on Wednesday, but that it was already over.

This is a developing story, and we'll update if any important information emerges.
