Martin Scorsese isn’t the only legendary, octogenarian movie director with an expensive, period-piece passion project bankrolled by Apple coming out this fall. Ridley Scott — who celebrated his 85th birthday in 2022, and has knocked out seven feature films in the last decade — will bring his life of the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte to theaters in November. Going by its first trailer, it’s got all the horse-based warfare, dodgy accents, and (checks notes) Radiohead trailercore you could want from a Ridley Scott historical epic.
“I’m the first to admit when I make a mistake. I simply never do.”
So says Napoleon Bonaparte (played by Joaquin Phoenix) in Napoleon, the upcoming historical epic. The first trailer for the film, directed by Ridley Scott, dropped earlier today.
The new film will be released in UK cinemas on November 22, before hitting streaming service Apple TV+ at a later date. It sees Phoenix star as Napoleon Bonaparte.
A synopsis for the film reads: “Napoleon is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Joséphine.
On Monday (10 July), the first trailer arrived online. It begins with the French revolution, with Napoleon being asked to step in and bring the people under control, before meeting Josephine.
However, rather than adopting French accents, both Phoenix and Kirby appear to speak in their respective American and British accents.
Questioning the use of the Radiohead cover in the trailer, one viewer commented: “The Napoleon movie definitely looks cool but the Radiohead cover is a baffling music choice.”
What’s more, Napoleon was often seen wearing his iconic cocked hat, which measured about 25 cm in height and would have added a few inches to the despotic ruler.
His soldiers were known to call him le petit corporal (behind his back), even though he would have seen eye to eye with most of them. Napoleon didn’t have to be the tallest man in the room to get his point across - he was an intimidating and powerful commander, and that seemed to be enough to get people to do what he asked of them.
Indeed as Scott described the project to Deadline, “Napoleon is a man I’ve always been fascinated by. He came out of nowhere to rule everything — but all the while he was waging a romantic war with his adulterous wife Josephine. He conquered the world to try to win her love, and when he couldn’t, he conquered it to destroy her, and destroyed himself in the process.”
