Dear Mr. Smith, I teach twelfth-grade English at an urban high school outside of Albany. The poverty rate here is high. And violent crime is a common occurrence. A large percentage of my students are males of color. Many of them have a friend or family member in the prison system. I’ve devoted my entire career to serving this population. I want to help them build a meaningful life past public school. My work can be both rewarding and soul-crushing. But it’s important work. And I’m all in.
