Nampa, Idaho, is kicking off the holiday festivities with its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Nov. 28, featuring a massive 5,000-pound Christmas tree.

As the Yuletide season takes hold, southwestern Idaho is embracing the holiday spirit by bringing the community together for a beloved tradition that marks the start of Christmas with a spectacular tree-lighting ceremony.

In an announcement from the municipal government, the upcoming event was made particularly special by a local family’s donation of the 2026 Christmas tree, which they had grown in their front yard for 24 years.

“It’s that time again, Nampa! The Christmas tree is back in downtown, in front of the train depot. Over the next few weeks, our Parks team will be working to repair and decorate the tree for the Christmas Tree Lighting! This year’s tree is a 38-foot white fir donated by the Jacobs family in Nampa. They planted the tree 24 years ago! The official tree lighting ceremony will be Saturday, November 28 in conjunction with Shop Small Saturday. The celebration will begin with entertainment at 5:00 p.m. and the tree lighting will be at 6 p.m.” the post reads.

Nampa city forester Adam Mancini told Idaho News 6 why the family chose to donate the tree for this year’s festivities.

Beautiful Christmas tree lights and figures lit up at an outdoor Festival of Lights puts on a spectacular display along the street and waterfront where families come from all over the state to witness this amazing Christmas traditional spectacle of lights in Idaho, United States.

The family planted the tree 24 years ago, but as it grew, its roots began causing problems near their home. Mancini explained that the homeowners were considering removing it if the city did not take it.

“They, in fact, told us that if we didn’t take the tree this year, they were going to have to cut it down because of the obstruction and being so close to their house and the concern with the root system,” Mancini said.

The 38-foot-tall, 5,000-pound white fir arrived on Nov. 6 and was placed in front of the historic train depot at 1200 Front Street in downtown Nampa.

The city’s announcement also highlighted the Jacobs family’s contribution, noting that the tree had been planted 24 years ago. The ceremony will take place in conjunction with Shop Small Saturday.

sparked excitement among community members, who expressed enthusiasm for the annual tradition while also thanking the family for its generous donation.

“It’s beautiful! Thanks go to the Jacob’s family,” one person wrote.

Another commenter shared a similar sentiment, saying, “Looks like another great tree full of wonderful gifts for the season! Thank you to the Jacob family.”

“That’s cool it came from someone’s yard in Nampa!” a social media user said.

After the holidays, the municipality plans to give the Christmas tree a second life by recycling it into mulch for Nampa’s parks and trail systems.
