VIDEO: Man armed with gun holds bus driver hostage in Chicago ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A man armed with a gun held a Chicago Transit Authority bus driver hostage this week until she was able to escape through a window, video captured by a passenger on the bus showed.

Quentin Lewis, a 36-year-old convicted felon from Chicago, is facing several felony charges, including kidnapping with a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated unlawful restraint, and possession of a weapon as a felon after the incident that occurred on Tuesday night, according to police.

Police said that around 8 p.m. on Nov. 3, Lewis allegedly boarded a CTA bus on the 2800 block of South Pulaski when he pulled out a gun and pointed it toward the front and the back of the bus. He then demanded the bus not stop, including through at least four red lights, prosecutors said.

The bus driver, a 35-year-old woman, complied out of fear she may be attacked, according to police.

Video shared with NBC Chicago showed a man with a gun standing near the bus driver vestibule on the bus.

After traveling several blocks while held hostage, the bus driver was able to come to a stop on the 5400 block of South Pulaski where she pulled the emergency lever inside the bus that would prevent Lewis from being able to drive if he took the wheel, prosecutors said.

While the bus was stopped, the passengers on the bus exited, but the driver was still inside with Lewis allegedly seated directly behind her. At that point, she managed to escape through one of the bus windows and run to another nearby CTA bus for safety, prosecutors said.

After the driver escaped, Lewis then allegedly fled the bus and went into an unoccupied car that had been left running while its owner ran into a nearby bakery. Police found him in the car, still holding the firearm.

Responding officers ordered Lewis to drop the firearm and exit the vehicle, police said. As officers attempted to place Lewis into custody, he allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and struck a marked CPD vehicle. Officers were ultimately able to take him into custody and recovered the weapon.

No injuries were reported.

CTA did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s inquiries.
