A missing peacock in Australia became the center of an unusual neighborhood mystery after wandering into a stranger’s bathroom and apparently becoming fascinated with his own reflection. But the bird’s adventure took an unexpected turn when his owners finally tracked him down.
The peacock, named Hex, went missing from his home in Alexandra Hills, a suburb of Brisbane, before turning up in the bathroom of Geoff and Delwyn Ballantyne, who had stepped out for coffee.
When the couple returned, they discovered an unexpected visitor standing in front of their bathroom mirror.
“There was a lot of screaming from my wife,” Geoff told The Guardian in a Nov. 3 report. “She thought there must have been an intruder but then she says it’s a peacock.”
The couple attempted to distract the bird with water and crackers, but Hex remained interested in his reflection. Eventually, wildlife rescuers arrived, wrapped him in a towel and released him into nearby bushland.
The Guardian shared a photo of Hex’s unexpected bathroom visit on Facebook, showing the colorful bird perched on the bathroom counter and looking toward the mirror.
The unusual encounter prompted some entertaining reactions from social media users.
“There’s a headline you don’t see every day,” one commenter wrote, while another joked, “Miranda-peacock!”
Others questioned how the situation was handled.
“Why on earth would they release it into bushland?” one person asked, pointing out that the bird appeared to be someone’s lost pet.
However, that wasn’t the end of Hex’s adventure.
The peacock continued appearing in yards around the neighborhood, including the property of resident Suzie Tafolo, who suspected the bird belonged to local tattoo artist Elliot Ross.
Ross, who owns Hex with his partner, Cassie Alexander, confirmed the peacock’s identity after seeing photographs of his distinctive plumage.
Hoping to help bring the missing bird home, Tafolo came up with an unusual idea: She moved a full-length mirror into a shed on her property after noticing Hex’s apparent interest in his reflection.
The strategy appeared promising when Hex began showing interest in the mirror, but capturing him proved more challenging.
According to a Nov. 6 follow-up report from The Guardian, hundreds of local residents followed the peacock’s movements on social media as the search continued.
The breakthrough finally came on Thursday, Nov. 5, when family friend Jordy Barker helped capture Hex in a residential yard.
Ross explained that the group had used blankets to block the bird’s escape before Barker managed to grab him.
Unfortunately, the reunion brought an unexpected scare.
After getting Hex back, his owners discovered that he had picked up six ticks during his time away. Concerned about his condition, they rushed him to a 24-hour veterinary hospital.
Alexander told The Guardian that the couple initially feared they might lose their beloved bird. Veterinarians ultimately treated Hex with an antiserum normally used for dogs, which his owners said helped him recover.
After his ordeal, Hex was finally able to return home, where he was reunited with Nyx, the family’s female peacock.
As for what inspired his unexpected adventure, Ross suggested that breeding season might have played a role. He said the family had been planning to introduce another female peacock, but Hex apparently decided to explore the neighborhood before she arrived.

However, experts cautioned against assuming the peacock was looking for romance. Darryl Jones, an urban ecologist and professor emeritus at Griffith University, told The Guardian that birds can respond to their reflections in different ways. While some interpret a reflection as a rival, he suggested Hex might simply have been responding to the apparent presence of another bird.
Whatever prompted his journey, Hex’s bathroom visit, neighborhood search and emergency veterinary treatment ultimately ended with the missing peacock safely back home.
