Elon Musk is pulling the plug on Cybertrucks.
The Tesla CEO announced on Friday, Nov. 6, that production of the vehicle will be slowing down in the Austin, Texas, factory, the only site where the truck is made.
Musk broke the news on his social media platform X. He wrote, “Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production.”
Musk’s post suggested that the decision was made to prioritize the production of the new Cybercab, a self-driving two-seater electric vehicle.
did not state whether the automotive company meant they were switching production to a different factory or completely ending the vehicles’ production. Cybertruck’s lead engineer, Wes Morrill, quoted the post, implying that the EV’s time has come to an end.
“Cybertruck was an incredible technology development platform and lives on through Cybercab,” he shared. “Thanks to everyone who contributed to making the future looking like the future As well to the community of owners whose adventures I’ve enjoyed and will continue to follow ❤️”
Musk also responded to some users on X, sharing that this is the “end of an era” and describing the Cybertruck as the “best vehicle Tesla has ever made.”
“True, but the Cybertruck fleet will be around for a long time,” Musk said.
The controversial Tesla Cybertruck was introduced in 2019 as a prototype and went on sale in 2023. At first, the truck was stated to cost $40,000, but by the time it went on sale, the price tag grew to $60,000.
