Metra riders now have a new way of receiving service alerts as the rail agency made a big change this week.
Starting Thursday, Metra said an upgraded alert system would allow customers to receive text messages in addition to emails.
The change will require riders to sign up, even if they are currently signed up for the old system.
The shift will mean riders can receive texts about their line and real-time arrival information for the station they’re boarding from.
But the old system, which offered email only, also shut down on the same day the new system launched.
“For privacy reasons, the data from that system can’t be imported into the replacement, so all customers who want to continue to receive alerts must sign up for the enhanced new service starting Nov. 5,” the rail agency said in a release.
In addition to the texts, a new website will also launch for service updates, metratracker.com, which allows riders to follow trains on a map and get real-time arrival information.
“Communicating with our customers is a critical part of Metra’s mission, and this new system is a major enhancement, not only because it supplies the timeliest and most accurate data but because for the first time it gives us the ability to communicate via text messaging,” Metra Executive Director and CEO Jim Derwinski said in a statement.
To receive alerts, riders will need to sign up at metratracker.com. They’ll need to not only create an account — with their phone number for texts — but also sign up for their designated alerts.
“Each alert type can be customized. For Service Alerts, after selecting their line, customers can select a time window during which they want to receive alerts, pick the days they want to receive them, and choose whether to receive them via text or email or both,” the agency noted. “If a customer wants to receive alerts for more than one trip a day – for instance, a trip downtown in the morning and a trip home in the evening – they must set up two separate alerts covering each trip by clicking on [Add Bulletin Alert.'”
