Could a parking strike affect Bears fans heading to Sunday night’s game at Soldier Field?
As the Bears take on the Buccaneers, another battle could unfold off the field.
Teamsters Local 727 told NBC Chicago there will be no parking at Soldier Field, warning that fans could face a picket line if the stadium parking operator brings in nonunion workers.
The ongoing strike, involving more than 1,200 workers, began Tuesday. Up until now, many drivers have told NBC 5 Investigates they haven’t noticed a difference, but that will soon change.
On Thursday, a spokesperson for Teamsters Local 727 told NBC 5, “There will be no parking at Soldier Field,” amid the strike. The union represents workers from Metropolis, which operates all 15 game-day lots and garages.
Some fans planning to attend the game have already said they’re changing their commute.
“I’m going to be using good old CTA. It’s not the best route. It’s not the best time of my life, but it works, right?” said Kenya Thomas, speaking with NBC 5 Investigates.
In a statement to NBC 5 Investigates, Metropolis said it has a “contingency plan in place that ensures Bears fans have a smooth parking experience this Sunday.”
Meanwhile, the union is asking fans to bear down and not cross the picket line, which will be in place Sunday. In a statement, the union wrote, “Chicago is a union town, and we must stand together.”
NBC 5 Investigates reached out to the Chicago Park District, which owns the lots at Solider Field for comment.
More than 250 garages and lots are served by members of Local 727, some with live attendants and others without.
The union told NBC 5 Investigates that even automated garages could face issues, including customers having trouble paying, gates failing to raise or lower, cleanliness concerns, and security problems.
