The EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) is grateful for the support as she celebrates a new family retrospective at New York City’s Museum of the Moving Image (MOMI).
“For decades, people knew I abused drugs and was in and out of rehab. I wrote about being passed out on a New York street and hearing doctors say I’d never walk, talk or even think again,” Minnelli, 80, told People on Thursday, November 5.

The Cabaret star expressed her gratitude to a close friend and a family member for helping her endure.
“Michael Feinstein flew to my side, held my hand, with my sister (Lorna Luft) and started crooning ‘Love Is Here to Stay,’” she shared.
“Michael singing me back to life made it possible for me to contribute to this great MOMI event,” Liza continued. “It’s one more example of the power that music has in everyone’s lives, if you open yourself to it.”
Singer/pianist Feinstein, 70, has worked with Minnelli throughout her career. Their conversations are the basis of her 2026 memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This! She also served as the executive producer of his 2022 album, Gershwin Country.
Luft, 73, has performed with her sister several times, including sharing the stage as children with their mother, the late Judy Garland, who died in 1969 at age 47.
The Wizard of Oz star was married to director Vincente Minnelli from 1945 to 1951. The retrospective, titled The Minnellis, features 31 films. Vincente, who died in 1986 at age 83, directed his wife in five films that are featured in the exhibition: Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Clock (1945), Ziegfeld Follies (1945), Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), and The Pirate (1948). He also worked with Liza on his final film as a director, A Matter of Time (1976).
Liza is thrilled to honor her father, who won an Academy Award for Best Director in 1959 for Gigi, which was also named Best Picture.
“My work presented in tandem with my father’s is a dream realized. We were only able to do one film together. He was such an extraordinary artist, and of course, my favorite director of all time,” she commented. “Not because he was my Papa, but because Vincente Minnelli is an unequaled genius.”
