There have been countless musical artists who have tried to break the mold, to no avail. However, certain groups have managed to release one-of-a-kind songs that prove their drive and determination, which have been met with fanfare.
Collider recently spotlighted several of these types of tunes by releasing a ranking of “The 10 Most Ambitious Songs of All Time.” The list put Queen’s 1975 hit “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the top spot. Other tracks featured on the ranking included 1967’s “A Day in the Life” by The Beatles, “Starless” by King Crimson from 1974, and “Close to the Edge” by Yes, released in 1972.
“Close to the Edge,” which has a nearly 20-minute runtime, is off Yes’ Close to the Edge album. The prog rock band’s fifth record only featured two other tracks, the 10-minute “And You and I” and the nearly nine-minute “Siberian Khatru.”
Yes Singer Jon Anderson Shared Some Insight Into ‘Close to the Edge’
Jon Anderson, Yes’s vocalist, shared how “Close to the Edge” came to be in a 2022 SiriusXM interview. He recalled coming into a practice where his bandmates, who included Steve Howe, Bill Bruford, Chris Squire, and Rick Wakeman, were “jamming.” Anderson recalled being impressed with how they sounded and wanted to record their jam session.
“It was wild. And I said, ‘Stop. Stop. Are you recording this?’ And they said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Can you just do that again?’” said Anderson during the 2022 interview.
Anderson said his bandmates complied.
“They went ahead and did it. And Steve’s guitar work was immaculate. I think they did three takes. And I think it was the second take that we said, ‘That is fantastic,’” said the British musician, now 82.
Anderson also said it was his idea to include pauses throughout the song.
“I said, ‘It’s great you sounded like an express train hurtling along, all of a sudden, you stop,’” said Anderson.
