UNC Football Player Cited for Chatham County Car Crash in September; Has Not Played Since ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

UNC football player Vodney Cleveland was cited for a car crash in Chatham County in September, a report from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol shows. WRAL was the first outlet to share the news.

According to the report, the crash occurred at approximately 9:52 p.m. the night of Sep. 18. Cleveland was driving a 2026 BMW south on Royal Sunset Drive, a residential street in the northeastern part of the county. The report states Cleveland was “improperly passing several vehicles in a no passing zone” when he swerved across the middle line of the road, then back across to the right and struck a tree. The vehicle came to a rest in the middle of the roadway following the collision, an estimated distance of 35 feet away from the tree.

The Highway Patrol report estimated Cleveland was traveling at roughly 80 mph at the beginning of the incident and roughly 60 mph when it struck the tree. The report said Cleveland was taken to UNC Hospital for evaluation and that the damages to the car are estimated at $15,000.

This is not the first time Cleveland has been cited this year. Just four days prior to the crash in Chatham, on Sep. 14, Cleveland was cited in Durham County for driving a 2023 Nissan Armada 66 mph in a 45 mph zone on North Carolina Highway 55. The reporting officer noted he was “polite and cooperative” after being pulled over.

One day following the Sep. 14 incident, two of Cleveland’s teammates – receivers Keeyun Chapman and C.J. Sadler – were involved in a traffic stop during which time Chapman was arrested for carrying a concealed handgun and Sadler was cited for speeding. Chapman has not played since the traffic stop, while Sadler’s usage has dwindled.

In another incident in February, Cleveland was cited as driving a third different vehicle – a black Dodge Durango – an estimated 100 mph on Interstate 40 near Greensboro. In the report, the officer also cited Cleveland for transporting a passenger in the back of the vehicle without a seatbelt.

Cleveland is a true freshman defensive lineman and arrived at UNC as a four-star prospect, having decommitted from Texas prior to committing to the Tar Heels. He has been designated as out for all of Carolina’s games against ACC opponents so far, per league rules on player availability reporting, and has not appeared in any other game this year.

“We are aware of a one-car accident involving football student-athlete Vodney Cleveland,” read a statement from the UNC football program sent to Chapelboro. “He is not currently participating in team activities.”
