Revisiting the past can often be strange, and can shift the way you look at what was once a landmark in your earlier life. For Minka Kelly, filming Ransom Canyon in New Mexico meant driving past the Albuquerque peep show where she once worked, and eventually walking back inside.
The Friday Night Lights alum described the visit on the Nov. 3 episode of Mom’s Car, a series from Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert.
Kelly, 46, first revealed in her 2023 memoir Tell Me Everything that at 17 she performed in peep shows at an Albuquerque adult-video store to support herself. The bestseller, which opens with that chapter, centers on her relationship with her late mother, an exotic dancer who struggled with addiction.
Ransom Canyon was shot in Albuquerque, her hometown. Worried the shoot would be complicated, she got a house in Santa Fe for the first season and commuted roughly an hour and 15 minutes each way. The route took her past the old business. “I would drive by the place where I did the peep show thing and I would see that all the time,” she said.

When she finally went in, the place did not match her memory. “It was all bright and white and smelled of bleach… and it just seemed so much smaller,” Kelly said. She asked to see the back. “Can I take a look back at the stages? Can I look back there?” she recalled asking. It was empty when she visited. “I just was like, ‘Wow, I don’t recognize this.’”
She also revisited the neighborhoods where she grew up. “All of it was so much smaller than I remembered and more depressing than I remember,” she said. “It was a little emotional.” The trip had one comfort: a restaurant whose recipes, she said, her grandfather helped create.
Three years after the memoir, Kelly said sharing her story has changed how she carries it. She described “a weight being lifted,” and said she once kept “so many secrets” out of fear people would find her “unlovable or unlikable.” Instead, “I’ve been met with so much connection that it’s sort of empowered me in a way.”
Not every reaction has been kind. She recalled trying to comfort a man who was ashamed of his own past by sharing hers, only to have him recoil. “I was met with so much disgust,” she said. Most readers, she said, have understood that “at that age, in that scenario, you really just do what you have to do to survive.”
The shoot itself marked a milestone. “You want me to be the lead of your show?” she recalled thinking. “I’m in my 40s. That’s happening.” Netflix canceled Ransom Canyon in September after two seasons.
Next, she is starting an interior design business with a friend of two decades. “I’ve never been happier than when I’m designing,” Kelly said.
