Lindsey Vonn Talks Recovery And Retirement As She Faces Ninth Surgery After Olympic Crash ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Following her devastating crash at the Milano Cortina Olympics earlier this year, Lindsey Vonn‘s road to recovery has consisted of multiple surgeries and rehab programs. With her ninth procedure coming up this Monday, the famed skier shared her outlook on her next phase of recuperation, her approach to pain management, and what the future holds.

“I feel pretty strong, and I feel good, but again I’m gonna basically go back to zero again and I’m not really looking forward to it,” she told Parade this week ahead of her upcoming ACL surgery. “But it has to be done, so [I’m] just doing the best I can.”

Vonn, 42, who suffered complex leg fractures and a broken ankle during a downhill event in February at the 2026 Games — on top of already competing with a torn ACL — has had her ups and downs this year since the crash. Just weeks following the incident, she shared that her injuries were so severe that a surgery saved her leg from being amputated.

However, in the months since, which included a stint in a wheelchair and on crutches, Vonn has made strides, appearing at events like the Met Gala, the U.S. Open, and sharing photos from beautiful vacations and outings. Still, this upcoming surgery has been a long time coming as she’s had to wait for “my bone to heal so that they can take all the plates out,” she said, explaining that “15 or 20 screws” will be removed from her leg so a new ACL can be created.

No stranger to injuries though, Vonn shared that this time around she’s been taking non-opioid medicine, Journavx, which she’s become a paid spokesperson for in partnership with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, to manage her post-op pain.

“This was a breakthrough and something that’s been a really big part of my recovery process and what we’re going to use going forward on Monday,” she explained, adding that Journavx was prescribed after her fifth surgery and was the first time she was given a non-opioid option for pain.

“With all the surgeries I’ve had, I always try to get off opioids as quickly as possible because they’ve never made me feel good. I really don’t think they work very well for me,” she added. “So this has been a big part of how I am able to manage my care postoperatively.”

Speaking of post-op life, Vonn has continued to be transparent with her millions of followers on social media as well as in interviews about how she’s dealing with recovery throughout the year.

“I do feel like I’ve been very open about everything. That’s kind of just my personality and how I approach everything,” she said. “I feel like s–t sometimes. Life is not perfect, and I feel like showing all sides of me…that’s my life.”

But whether she’s posting a video of her playing tennis or working out, with her doctor’s approval, she admitted that showing off her scars has “been the hardest part” of maintaining her social media presence these days. “Coming out of surgery, they looked horrible, and I was really scared,” she said of her scars. “It was probably one of the most disgusting visuals, and also just for me to feel my leg being in pieces was hard. I just want people to know that we all have hard days, and it always gets better. Like, no matter how bad your day is, it will get better eventually.”

Looking beyond her scheduled surgery, where she predicts she’ll be on crutches for four weeks (“Could be more, maybe less.”), she knows there’s a long road ahead of her before she’s back on the slopes — despite recently being listed on the Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team’s roster for the 2027-2028 season.

“I know that I haven’t retired yet, and that’s why I’m on the team,” she said. “I do feel that things are unfinished with my career. So mentally, there’s something there that I have to sort through and decide whether I physically can do it, whether I mentally want to do it, [and] if it’s worth it.”

“But I will say, my last season was the most enjoyable, fun season I’ve ever had in my entire career, and I am motivated,” she added. “So we’ll see what happens.”? SIGN UP for Parade’s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox ?
