Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger is sharing an update on his health almost four months after he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
The 75-year-old retired pilot earned household recognition after an emergency landing on the Hudson River following a bird strike that damaged the aircraft’s engines. The 2009 incident is referred to as the “Miracle on the Hudson” because all 155 people on board survived. The 2016 film Sully, starring Tom Hanks, portrays the event.
Sullenberger found out he had the neurological disorder in August 2025. He opened up about the news publicly in July. In a recent interview with People, he gave an update on his treatment and support system.
“I am still undergoing the monthly infusions [of a drug for Alzheimer’s],” he told the outlet. “I tolerate them well with no side effects. They have been successful in removing a significant amount of plaque from my brain, which will not reverse the disease but can slow the symptoms.”
Sullenberger explained that he tries to keep his day-to-day consistent, making sure to get his exercise in.
“My days are pretty normal—still engaged in projects, still running two miles several times a week,” he shared. “I workout with a trainer and I really enjoy lifting weights a few times a week. He is an ex-Marine so we enjoy talking about our military experiences.”
The former pilot emphasized the importance of his family, calling them his support system.
“[My wife] Lorrie is my main support right now,” Sullenberger said. “Given the disease is still early sometimes it’s hard to tell if it is simply an old married couple remembering a story differently or the disease.”
“My daughters live close by so it is a joy to see them regularly,” he continued. “I was heartened by the number of people responding to my announcement, who then found the courage to share their diagnosis with their family and friends. And, of course, so many passengers from flight 1549 have reached out. Their kind words really do have an impact.”
