It’s been an ugly start to the 2026-27 season for the Blackhawks. We all know it. And there could be consequences in the not-too-distant future. I wrote about it yesterday. So did Ben Pope — but he has a more immediate panic button ready for the Blackhawks. Tonight, the Blackhawks begin a rough span of three games in five nights… at Florida, Tampa and Carolina. After that, a break. And that’s what Ben has circled on his calendar.
Indeed, that four-day break between games next week should give the young Hawks a valuable opportunity to rejuvenate after grinding through nine games in 16 days.
But for Hawks general manager Kyle Davidson, that break might be the opposite of relaxing. If Davidson is going to make any big changes to this struggling team — be it to Jeff Blashill’s coaching staff or to the roster — things are aligning to make that break potentially the most logical time to do so.
If this brutal road trip goes badly, the Blackhawks could face a reckoning next week. The four-day break would be a logical time for Kyle Davidson to make changes, if he's going to.New column: t.co/bSsrYlOyUi
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 3, 2026 Even with as bad as things are on the macro, it’s worth noting that we enter Wednesday with Roman Kantserov tied for the NHL rookie lead with six goals. The other Blackhawks rookie forward, Anton Frondell, hit 93.69 mph on a shot in the third period against Colorado — his second-hardest shot of the season (according to NHL EDGE). With two shots registering over 90 mph already this season, he’s in the 99th percentile in the NHL. Frank Nazar almost joined Frondell in the 90 mph club on Monday night. Nazar clocked an 89.66 mph shot in the second period against the Avalanche, his hardest of the season. That’s in the 91st percentile of the league to date. A reply to a Ben Pope tweet got some buzz on Tuesday. And it came from an analytics source that’s been cited by Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill.Steve Valiquette, whose pioneering work in hockey analytics Jeff Blashill actually brought up just a few weeks ago, weighs in on the Blackhawks: t.co/m6VjsG37ve
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) November 3, 2026 Since we’re talking about analytics, how about a little love for Andrew Mangiapane. He’s appeared in only four games this season, but Natural Stat Trick indicates he’s the only skater on the Blackhawks at 5-on-5 who has an on-ice shots for percentage over 50 (54.84), an on-ice scoring chances for percentage over 50 (55.17) and an on-ice expected goals for percentage over 50 (62.20). The Blackhawks have a 7-2 edge in high danger chances while he’s been on the ice; only Frank Nazar (30-29 — 50.85 percent) is also over 50 percent in that category. It’s a tiny sample size (34:58 total), but he’s been effective when he’s been on the ice. The Blackhawks recalled Dillon Boucher from Rockford on Tuesday. He’ll slide into a lineup that will be without Patrick Kane. Not Sacha Boisvert, whose name initially appeared as the recall on the AHL transaction register. Not AJ Spellacy, who could — like Boisvert — be a FAFO guy against the Florida Panthers. It’s the 29-year-old Boucher who gets the call. Nick Lardis didn’t get the call because he’s expected to miss 1-2 weeks because of a lower-body injury, according to the IceHogs.Medical Update | Nov. 3, 2026 t.co/rHCuYOuIfq
