Pia Dandiya Topples Casey Askar in Florida District Redrawn to Favor Republicans ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

The Democrats are having a memorable night and the wins keep on coming.

In what may feel like a surprising victory, Pia Dandiya, a candidate from the Democratic Party, has won Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Casey Askar in a race that carries significance beyond the state.

According to The New York Times, Dandiya received 51.9% of the vote, with 99% of precincts reporting. The Associated Press has also called this race.

Her victory makes Dandiya the first South Asian American to represent Florida in the U.S. Congress, a milestone for the state’s political representation. Born and raised in Palm Beach County to Indian immigrant parents, she is a former teacher and high school principal who served as a White House Fellow and worked at Apple. She will take office when the new Congress convenes in January.

During her victory speech, Dandiya stated, “The beauty of the American dream is that it is not written by just one person or one generation or one party. It is written by each and every single one of us. It is my honor to be able to write a part of that next chapter.” She went on to thank the natives of South Florida for trusting her.

The contest was for an open seat. Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel ran in the newly configured 23rd District after Florida lawmakers approved a congressional map that changed District 22. The reworked district connects parts of Palm Beach and Broward counties with Hendry County and communities in Collier County, including Marco Island.

That map was designed to improve Republican prospects. The district backed Donald Trump by 55% to 44% in the 2024 presidential election, after supporting Joe Biden in 2020. Askar, a Naples businessman and Marine Corps veteran, campaigned as a supporter of Trump.

Dandiya centered her campaign on affordability, education, health care and economic opportunity. Her win is also part of a wider pattern in Florida, where Democrats Kathy Castor and Jared Moskowitz held seats redrawn to favor Republicans.

The 2026 midterms are shaping up as a difficult night for Republicans. Early results show Democrats gaining ground in key House and Senate contests in several closely contested races nationwide, including Senate victories for Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Jon Ossoff in Georgia.

An Associated Press voter poll found widespread dissatisfaction with the country’s direction, while younger voters moved toward Democratic House candidates. Control of Congress remains the central prize, with results still developing. The result could reshape the balance of power in Washington.
