The Chicago Bulls added another loss to their record last night against the mighty Philadelphia 76ers.
As usual, Caleb Wilson impressed, while others left us depressed. Seems to be the theme of this season. But we’re far from done, and things could get even uglier for Chicago with a matchup against the New York Knicks next, followed by a rematch with the 76ers.
Before we get into those games, we’ve got plenty to break down from last night: what we liked and didn’t like, Matas Buzelis’ reasoning behind his poor performance, Caleb Wilson breaking more records, and much more.
Let’s talk Bulls basketball.
LeBron James shots against the Bulls. The Chicago Bulls kicked off the month of November with another loss to another good team. And, for the most part, we saw some familiar suspects from other Bulls games this season: a losing first quarter, poor 3-point shooting, a few good flashes and another bad performance or two from players not named Caleb Wilson. I know this is a problem that doesn’t get fixed overnight, or maybe even this month. But every game, you sort of tune in hoping to see something promising. And last night, we just found one more thing to be mad about. Matas Buzelis finished the game with 4 points, 3 rebounds, 4 personal fouls and 5 turnovers in just 23 minutes of action. And this hasn’t exactly been a one-off so far, with Matas’ averages dropping across the board compared to his rookie season, when he was supposedly “on a leash.” While this was his worst performance of the season, seeing Buzelis put together a genuinely good game has been a bit of a rarity so far. Even the one skill he’d previously showcased, drawing fouls, was absent last night. And that could have really helped the Bulls at least stay afloat. Naturally, Matas was held accountable for his performance after the game, and here’s what he had to say:“If you guys can recall, every one of my beginning of my seasons, first and second, they were tough. It was difficult. New guys coming in, this year, it’s even harder… As I keep saying, it’s a process. I promise you I’ll figure it out.”
And we root for Matas around here. We genuinely want him to do well and develop into that running mate alongside Caleb Wilson. But his lack of aggressiveness makes you forget he’s even on the court sometimes. And that’s really the problem here. In his 4-point performance, it’s not like he went 2-for-15. Matas attempted just five shots. On this Bulls team, Josh Giddey and Tre Jones can facilitate and get guys involved, but there’s no real structured offense to fall back on. Much like Caleb, if you want to score, you’re going to have to create for yourself. That’s where Matas needs to start. And we root for Matas around here. — Joel Lorenzi (@JoelXLorenzi) November 3, 2026 On the flip side, here’s a Bulls young forward who actually had a decent game last night, and that was Noa Essengue. After putting up a career-high against the Boston Celtics, he followed it up with 8 points, 6 rebounds and a block in 14 minutes off the bench. He’s still got some work to do when it comes to managing his fouls, but Noa showcased some good defense and, more importantly, some aggression. His recent play has also earned him a bigger role in the rotation, especially with the Bulls lacking depth in the frontcourt. Compared to Matas, Noa was a breath of fresh air. There’s still plenty of room to improve, and we’re not exactly seeing flashes of superstar potential here. But a workhorse, do-it-all kind of player who could carve out a long NBA career? That’s something worth developing. Hopefully, we get more performances like this, and a win or two wouldn’t hurt either.Noa Essengue making things happen! pic.twitter.com/T8mrTWMcZP
— CHGO Bulls (@CHGO_Bulls) November 3, 2026 And finally, the real silver lining, as always, was Caleb Wilson. Caleb finished with 24 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals while shooting 45% from beyond the arc. And while the performance came in another loss, it still earned the rookie a few more achievements. This was Caleb’s third straight 20-plus-point game and his fifth already in his young career. He joined Michael Jordan as the only players in Chicago Bulls history to score 150-plus points through their first seven career games. Caleb also joined Allen Iverson as the only players in NBA history to record 150-plus points, 15-plus 3-pointers made and 10-plus steals through their first seven career games. He’s also the first rookie in Bulls history to record at least four steals and four 3-pointers in a game. Sure, some of these stats are a little cherry-picked, but they still showcase the progress and consistency Caleb has shown just seven games into his NBA career. The Rookie of the Year campaign is looking strong, and we’re all here for it. Just ignore the Bulls’ actual record, okay?Caleb's third straight 20-point game ?vs. PHI: 24 PTS (9-17 FG), 7 REB, 4 AST, 4 STL pic.twitter.com/2R9Sq9y4f4
