Mississippi voters will decide today who will fill a U.S. Senate seat, four U.S. House seats, two state House seats, numerous judgeships and several local races or referendums.

The federal midterm elections will determine control of both chambers of Congress, and Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race is being watched nationally as Republicans and Democrats battle across the country.

Mississippi voters have returned about 2.5 times as many absentee ballots as they had at this point in the 2022 midterms. But there was no Senate race on the ballot in 2022, and the numbers remain below the last presidential race.

As of Monday, circuit clerks’ offices had received 116,453 absentee ballots, according to the Secretary of State’s office. At the same point in 2022, the day before that election, they had received 46,120.

The absentee ballot count this year is still below the 2024 federal election cycle, but voter turnout usually increases in presidential election years. At this point in the 2024 election, 197,903 absentee ballots had been received.

In-person absentee voting ended at noon Saturday, Oct. 31. Mail-in absentee ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, Nov. 3, but they can be received within five business days, by Nov. 10.
