Wolff: ‘We let him down’ as Russell suffers another Mercedes blow ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

George Russell left the Mexico City Grand Prix with little to show for a weekend that had promised considerably more, as another Mercedes deployment failure sabotaged his race before it had properly begun, leaving the Briton watching yet another opportunity slip through his fingers.

Having missed out on pole position by a mere 0.009 seconds to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton in qualifying, Russell had every reason to approach Sunday's race with confidence.

A strong getaway initially put him in an encouraging position, but that optimism evaporated almost immediately when his Mercedes suffered a significant energy deployment problem along the opening straight.

The sudden loss of electrical power left Russell vulnerable as rivals swept past, turning what could have been a serious challenge for victory into an afternoon of damage limitation.

And the misery did not end there. While attempting to recover lost ground, the Mercedes driver became embroiled in a fight with Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, making contact with the rear of his rival's car and sending the Frenchman into a spin.

The stewards subsequently handed Russell a 10-second time penalty for the collision.

He later managed to keep McLaren's Lando Norris behind him before heading into the pits, but a lengthy stop further undermined his recovery, costing him fifth place and valuable championship ground.

Another Mercedes failure leaves Russell stranded

For Russell, the latest setback was particularly difficult to accept given how well positioned he had been at the start. His frustration was compounded by the fact that the decisive problem was entirely beyond his control.

The Briton nevertheless began his post-race assessment by acknowledging Antonelli's extraordinary achievement, before turning to an afternoon that had unravelled through no fault of his own.

“Firstly, congratulations to Kimi on a thoroughly deserved championship,” Russell reflected. “He has done a fantastic job this season and can be incredibly proud of what he has achieved.

“Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing race on my side. I made a good start and was in a strong position, but then we suffered an issue which caused me to not have full deployment down the straight.

“That cost us a lot of positions and ultimately took us out of contention for a strong result. It’s frustrating to have the race compromised by something outside of my control but that is racing.

“We will reset after this weekend and look to come back stronger in Brazil. We still have a Constructors’ Championship to win and my full focus is on helping the team achieve that.”

The deployment problem also brought back uncomfortable memories of Mercedes' difficulties earlier in the season.

Russell has repeatedly found himself on the receiving end of the team's technical shortcomings, including at the Belgian Grand Prix, where another energy delivery issue left him exposed and contributed to an on-track confrontation.

For a driver who had started the weekend looking capable of challenging for the top step, Mexico represented another painfully familiar exercise in frustration.

Wolff admits Mercedes let Russell down

Toto Wolff made little attempt to disguise his sympathy for his driver, acknowledging that Mercedes had effectively deprived Russell of a potentially winning afternoon.

The Austrian also recognised the emotional difficulty of the situation, particularly with Antonelli celebrating a historic world title while his team-mate was left contemplating what might have been.

“I saw George after the race on the scales and obviously he is distraught about the situation,” Wolff told written media after the race. “It was a great show of sportsmanship to go and see Kimi. I have known George for such a long time.

“He is going through a hard time. For a racing driver this is a catastrophic moment and maybe today the race was a little bit a picture of his season, you know, this was a race for him to win.

“We had the pace in the car, and we let him down on the first straight. The energy delivery is not what we thought it should be. And so, I'm very much with him at the moment – I've been in situations where it’s very difficult to cope.”

Wolff's admission was a damning assessment of Mercedes' failure to deliver on its potential.

The team had the machinery to fight at the front, but an energy deployment malfunction at the worst possible moment left Russell scrambling to recover from a deficit he should never have faced.

While Antonelli had every reason to celebrate a career-defining afternoon, Russell was left with another reminder of how cruelly the margins can turn against a driver.

Heading into this week’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Russell now sits fourth in the Divers’ standings with 250 points, or 11 points behind second-placed man Max Verstappen.
