Avalanche ready for challenge with Josh Manson out of the lineup ...Middle East

Sport by : (Mile High Sports) -

Avalanche defenseman Josh Manson will miss about eight weeks after injuring his ankle during the first period of Wednesday night’s game against the New Jersey Devils.

“It’s an irreplaceable loss. The leadership, the physicality, that experience — it’s not easy to replace. We’re going to miss him a lot and just hope his recovery goes quick,” Brett Kulak said.

“We’ve all experienced a big piece going down. We’ve missed Cale (Makar), we’ve missed lots of different guys. It’s just part of the business, part of the game. We know what to expect. You got to pick up the slack, and everyone’s got to have a little more bite in their game too. You don’t have to go and lay the hits Mans (Manson) lays, but you still got to collectively make it a hard night, hard team to play against for the other teams.”

While Manson’s play is unparalleled, Noah Juulsen will fill the spot on the defense. He is ready for the task, having played in eight games in varied capacities.

“Just practicing hard when you can, doing little things after practice, staying with it, and the coach has been great,” Juulsen said. “Just doing drills here and there, so just staying with it and staying engaged when you can.”

Bednar impressed with Juulsen’s abilities

Head coach Jared Bednar has confidence in Juulsen and said he has surprised him.

“I knew him a little bit, but you never really know what a guy’s capable of, or what his strengths are, until you see him in your organization and in your system and around the room,” Bednar said. “I love his attitude. He just wants to do anything he can to help. He’s a real positive guy, and he’s played great for us.”

Bednar highlighted his expectations and how the 6-foot-2 defenseman has fit in with the team.

“His focus is chance shot suppression and chipping in wherever he can on the offensive side of it. He’s done a great job of that so far this year,” Bednar said. “I expect him to pick up where he’s left off and continue to help us try and win.”

Avalanche respond with a sense of urgency

The Avs achieved a much-needed bounce-back win against the Devils, setting a new tone for the team moving forward.

“There’s a sense of urgency in the room now, or it’s a bit of a like ‘enough is enough’ attitude, kind of thing. It’s taken us a while to find our game, where we want to get to — we can’t just expect for it to just happen,” Kulak said. “You got to go make it happen sometimes. Last game was a good step in the right direction, and we’ve had a couple good days here now to prepare for the next game. And we just got to keep it rolling.”

Forward Jaden Schwartz said the team was more energized in the win over New Jersey.

“Our energy was good. We were moving our feet; we were more aggressive. Forecheck was good. Everyone was dialed in,” Schwartz said. “We were kind of hungry too, to put a full 60 together and bounce back. Because obviously a few games there we weren’t too happy with, so everyone was just kind of ready and anxious or excited to get back to how we know we can play.”
