The Los Angeles Chargers can’t hold Khalil Mack hostage forever.
Or can they?
The Chargers are 0-6 and enter their Week 8 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams as underdogs. They’ll also go into the game with a 0.2 percent chance of making the playoffs, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index projections. It’s not as if The Athletic’s postseason forecast is any better, as the site’s playoff simulator also has the Chargers with less than a 1 percent shot of making it to the dance. Things are so bleak for the Chargers that not even a win against the Rams would get them to move above a 1 percent chance of making the playoffs.
And yet, the Chargers reportedly continue to make Mack unavailable in trade talks.
No, seriously.
Here is the reporting from The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones:
The Chargers have confounded teams by not engaging in trade talks. The Bolts are 0-6 but are telling teams Khalil Mack isn’t available. It’s hard to envision that remaining the case over the next 10 days.
Again, I ask: The Chargers can’t hold Khalil Mack hostage forever … can they?

On the one hand, the public negotiations are fascinating to watch. One day, we’ve got league reporters saying that Mack going back to the Bears “makes the most sense.” And in the next, you’ve got a scoop about how the Bears keep calling the Chargers about a Mack trade, but Los Angeles keeps not picking up. This is starting to remind me of a classic MLB Trade Deadline saga. The will-they-or-won’t-they-trade-Player-X-before-the-deadline angles are new-ish to the NFL. But I don’t mind that they’ve migrated into our spaces. It adds a little extra juice to this time of year for us.
But on the other hand, they’re an annoyance. Wake up, Chargers. It’s OK to face reality. Rip off the bandage and make the moves that will make your team better in 2027 because it’s never been more ove rin 2026.
I don’t expect those calls to stop just because Chicago landed All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons in a trade that bolsters its defensive line. Bears General Manager Ryan Poles sounds open to doing more via trades, but appears to have drawn a line in the sand when it comes to the cost of doing business. In other words, the Bears might not be done even after the big splash. And a Mack trade could still be in the cards. But only if the price is right. Good on Poles for setting boundaries.
Even though the Chargers continue playing hardball when it comes to a potential Khalil Mack trade, we will continue watching this storyline with great interest. Plus, it gives us a reason to tune into FOX’s coverage of Sunday’s Chargers-Rams game. A good, old-fashioned hate watch where Bears fans root for the Chargers to lose so they can come to their senses and send Mack back to Chicago feels like a good way to spend my Sunday afternoon.
