Disclaimer: I envy Atlanta de Cadenet Taylor. She has two hot (yet simultaneously cool) dads: one is the bassist from British New Wave legends Duran Duran, and the other is the lead guitarist from 2000s rock revival band The Strokes. This week, her dad and stepdad proved that blended families really can rock together.
On Wednesday night, Duran Duran’s John Taylor brought Nick Valensi onstage at Paris’ Accor Arena to play the band’s 1982 hit “Rio” for their encore. The connection? Valensi is married to Taylor’s ex-wife, photographer and The Conversation podcast host Amanda de Cadenet, making him Atlanta’s stepfather. And the family’s musical ties don’t stop there: Atlanta is married to Dave Macklovitch of the electro-funk duo Chromeo, so there’s no shortage of rock stars at the holiday table..
The jam session came together last minute. Valensi was already in Paris helping his and de Cadenet’s daughter, Ella, settle into a new apartment, so Taylor invited the family to the show and asked Valensi to sit in with the band. Valensi had just 48 hours to prepare, but the song was already familiar. “I know ‘Rio,’” he told Rolling Stone. He just had to remind his fingers how to play it.
Backstage, rather than any awkwardness, the two musicians talked about how to describe their unusual bond. Valensi admitted he wasn’t sure that marrying the same woman technically made them related, but said Taylor felt like a brother-in-law, and that when family asks you to play “Rio,” you say yes. Taylor’s answer was even simpler: “I think of you as my daughter’s other dad.”
View this post on InstagramThe mutual admiration goes beyond family ties, too. Valensi called himself a huge Duran Duran fan, while Taylor said the whole band was thrilled with how the performance turned out.
The Paris performance came during a busy stretch for both bands. Duran Duran are in the middle of their first full U.K. arena run in three years. Valensi, meanwhile, has been on a temporary break from the Strokes since May. While he was jamming with Duran Duran, the Strokes were wrapping up their 2026 European tour in Dublin, and they’re set to perform on Saturday Night Live on Nov. 7.
For two musicians from different corners of rock history, the performance was a reminder that family connections can make for some pretty excellent encores. And for Atlanta, having Duran Duran’s bassist and The Strokes’ guitarist in her corner is a family affair with a very good soundtrack.
