The PunCube Mech Wallet combines an aluminum card-ejection system with optional bifold storage. Here’s how it performed after more than a month of everyday use.

Over the years, I’ve tried many different types of wallets, and I typically end up with a traditional bifold-style EDC. They work well for me, but I’ve really started to appreciate some of the more modern wallet designs like the PunCube Mech Wallet. It takes a different approach to the traditional wallet, combining a compact aluminum design with a mechanical card-ejection system that makes accessing my cards a little more interesting.

About the PunCube Mech Wallet

The PunCube Mech Wallet is a minimalist aluminum wallet designed to make accessing cards quick and convenient with a mechanical card-ejection system. Its compact design combines durable metal construction with a choice of mechanical feels, while the optional Bifold Module adds extra storage for cash and cards. Together, they offer a customizable everyday carry solution for those who want the convenience of a slim wallet without giving up the functionality of a traditional bifold.

USER EXPERIENCE

The Mech Wallet definitely has a solid feel to it. It comes packaged with a money clip, screwdriver, screw pack, and user manual. And, in my case, I ordered the Bifold Module as well. The first step was to attach the Bifold Module to the main body of the wallet using the provided screwdriver and screws. It wasn’t difficult at all to screw the module into place, except that the screws were small.

After I had the wallet set up, I put my cards into place. The reason I wanted the Bifold Module was that I thought it would be an easier way to carry a bit of cash along with my cards. I’ve also found out to be extremely useful for me as a photographer to keep an extra SD card on me at all times. I fit six regular cards in the regular wallet pocket and then an additional two cards in the sleeve of the Bifold Module. I was also able to slide a glasses wipe into that sleeve.

I’ve been using the Mech Wallet for over a month now, and overall, I’ve been pleased with how it works. The card-ejection mechanism has a firm feel to it, which gives it a satisfying mechanical action. When I activate it, my cards fan out so I can see what I’m carrying and choose the one I need. The only frustration I have is that it can be hard to actually grab the card I want from the fanned out group. More than once, I’ve had to pull all the cards out just to select the one I want. It’s not enough of a frustration for me to stop using it, but something I had to get used to.

The Bifold Module has been a useful addition to the wallet, especially since I wanted a convenient way to carry cash without giving up the compact design of a cardholder. Having a separate sleeve for additional cards and a place to keep cash makes the overall setup more versatile.

I’ve also found it convenient to access the cash when I need it. The module gives me some of the functionality I would expect from a traditional bifold wallet while allowing me to keep my primary cards in the mechanical cardholder. Being able to carry eight cards along with a glasses wipe also gives me enough flexibility for the things I regularly need.

Even with the Bifold Module attached, the wallet has been comfortable in my pocket. I was initially curious whether adding the extra storage would make it too bulky, but that hasn’t been a problem for me. It gives me the additional functionality I wanted without making the wallet inconvenient to carry throughout the day.

Conclusion

After more than a month of use, I think PunCube has put together an interesting alternative to the traditional wallet. The mechanical card-ejection system is enjoyable to use, the aluminum construction feels premium, and the Bifold Module adds functionality that makes the wallet more practical for everyday use.
