It’s been more than 30 years since Michael Caine played Ebenezer Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol, but the beloved holiday movie is getting an unexpected new chapter, complete with a new actor stepping into Caine’s famous role.
Walton Goggins, known for his roles in The White Lotus and Fallout, is taking on Scrooge in A Who Knew Carol, a new Walmart holiday advertising campaign inspired by the 1992 Christmas classic.
The campaign, which debuted Oct. 26, reunites familiar Muppets including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Rizzo the Rat and Fozzie Bear. It also features Stephanie Beatriz, who voiced Mirabel in Disney’s Encanto, as Scrooge’s niece. Pepé the King Prawn also makes an appearance, joining the Muppet Christmas Carol universe for the first time.
View this post on InstagramAlthough Goggins is taking over the role Caine famously played, the project isn’t a new feature film or an official movie sequel. Instead, it’s a series of holiday commercials created through a collaboration between Walmart, Disney and The Muppets Studio.
The first commercial recreates the opening musical number from The Muppet Christmas Carol, with the Muppets warning everyone about the return of the notoriously grouchy Scrooge.
The commercial also includes some playful references to the original film. Gonzo and Rizzo return as the story’s narrators, while Pepé jokes about his absence from the 1992 movie.
And Goggins gets to deliver one of Scrooge’s most recognizable lines: “Bah humbug!”
Walton Goggins Shares a Hilarious Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Muppets Reunion
The fun hasn’t stopped with the commercial itself.
On Oct. 29, Walmart shared a behind-the-scenes video on Instagram featuring Goggins giving viewers a tour of the production’s elaborate sets. During the tour, Goggins approaches his dressing room, only to discover Rizzo the Rat lounging in a bowl of jellybeans.

Fans have also been sharing their excitement about the campaign on Walmart’s Instagram account.
“For my generation, this is I got a Cabbage Patch for Christmas good!” one commenter wrote.
Another praised the retailer’s creative team, writing, “You nailed every frame of this and brought a whole bunch of millennials so much joy to kick off the week.”
The nostalgic response isn’t surprising considering how beloved The Muppet Christmas Carol has become since its release in 1992.
More Muppets Holiday Surprises Are Coming
The campaign will continue throughout the holiday season, with additional videos featuring three new Christmas spirits: the Ghost of Christmas Presents, the Ghost of Deals to Come and the Ghost of Christmas Fast.
Each character will introduce Goggins’ Scrooge to different aspects of Walmart’s holiday shopping experience, including gift ideas, Black Friday deals and express delivery.
This isn’t Goggins’ first time portraying a famous Christmas grouch for Walmart, either. The actor played the Grinch in the retailer’s 2025 holiday campaign.
For fans who grew up watching The Muppet Christmas Carol, the campaign offers a nostalgic return to the characters and humor that made the 1992 film a holiday favorite—with Goggins bringing his own twist to Scrooge.
