Ugly Problems, Where’s Bertuzzi? More Trade Noise, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Blackhawks rolled into Detroit on what quickly turned into an emotional day for the Red Wings organization and… laid an egg. The 4-1 final score felt about right for how much the Red Wings controlled the game. It probably should have been worse if not for good goaltending in the first 40 minutes. There was so much to not like about last night’s loss, but there are a couple things that stand out most.

The Blackhawks’ best, most offensively threatening line against the Kings was Frank Nazar between Oliver Moore and Patrick Kane. Which makes their deployment last night an absolute mystery. That trio started shifts with one offensive zone faceoff… and seven defensive zone draws. I know Moore and Nazar were the only guys winning faceoffs last night, but starting Kane’s shifts in the defensive zone seems… counterintuitive? Meanwhile, the line of Anton Frondell, Tyler Bertuzzi and Ryan Donato started six shifts with an offensive zone faceoff to just one in the defensive zone. And that line still managed an expected goals for percentage of only 10.73 in 6:19 of 5-on-5 time together. That’s… not good. When I wrote about the Blackhawks putting Frondell in positions to succeed more on Monday, I hoped to see more offensive zone time. But… Frondell’s 10:43 of 5-on-5 ice time last night was a team low. Again: Frondell is, in my opinion, the second most offensively threatening player on the roster. What are we doing? Whatever was working so well for Bertuzzi seemingly all of last season is… gone. Even with the more offensive shift starts last night, he skated only 11:40 at 5-on-5 and had exactly zero shot attempts. Bertuzzi led the Blackhawks with 32 goals last year. He has now gone five games without a point and six without a goal. In the six games since his last goal, Bertuzzi has been credited with seven total shots on net. Wherefore art thou, Tyler? The other significant problem is the Red Wings going wherever they wanted on the ice. Look at this 5-on-5 heat map from last night. Look at where the dark red is on the Detroit side. Spencer Knight was facing traffic and shots from high danger areas all night; the Red Wings were credited with 14 high danger chances in the game (12 at 5-on-5). Now look at where the blue is on the Blackhawks’ side. Source: Natural Stat Trick Let’s move on… The thing about trade noise is it usually starts somewhere and then snowballs. There are enough credible people mentioning the Blackhawks being open for business that the smoke is undeniable at this point. And losses like last night are only going to make that noise louder for everyone involved. Over the past week, I’ve received dozens emails, texts and DMs about the Blackhawks trade “rumors” involving Nazar and Moore. But a couple on Thursday were similar and… interesting. They both asked if either/both Nazar and/or Moore would be opposed to moving to the wing full-time, or if either had a specific position preference. Nazar played wing until he got to Michigan, played wing for the US at the World Championship, and has consistently told me he’s comfortable at either position. Moore played both positions at Minnesota, played both for the US at the World Juniors and the World Championship, and is currently playing wing for the Blackhawks. I don’t think either player would say center or wing is their first choice of or preferred position. They want to win. With that being said, Moore winning 8 of 9 faceoffs last night was noteworthy. On Thursday’s episode of the “32 Thoughts” Podcast, Elliotte Friedman poured cold water on the report I shared here yesterday from Bruce Garrioch that Teuvo Teräväinen‘s name was out there in trade rumors.

“There were some rumors about Teräväinen on the weekend from Chicago… I looked into that and was told it wasn’t true. And I heard that from a couple of places.”

There was more smoke around the Blackhawks’ potential interest in Capitals winger Ivan Miroshnichenko on Thursday. According to Jeff Marek on the “DFO Insider” podcast, the asking price is “at least a first-round pick.” So… here’s where I’m at on this one: yes, the Blackhawks have three picks in the first round of the 2027 NHL Draft. But… yes, a first-round pick for a guy who has scored six (6) goals in 55 NHL games feels like high. Nevermind the fact that the Blackhawks would need to move pieces off their NHL roster to create a spot in the lineup for him to actually play — and the Hawks already have Nick Lardis in Rockford. I will throw in here that Miroshnichenkov’s agent, Dan Milstein, also reps Artyom Levshunov. Speaking of Levshunov, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill has frequently brought up the early days of Moritz Seider’s career in Detroit as a comparison. So Ben Pope spoke with Seider, who has become one of the better defensemen in the league, about that maturation process and what he sees in Levshunov. He complimented the Blackhawks’ young defensemen.

“It looks like the guy doesn’t get tired out there,” he said. “He’s learning the game more and more. It takes a little bit to adjust, but I think his skill level is very underrated. He has great hands in tight areas. Obviously, he’s going to be a big part of that blue line for a long time.”

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 29, 2026 Since I brought up Lardis, Scott Powers threw this into his comments about the Hawks thru 12 games to start the season:

It’s unlikely the Blackhawks turn to Rockford for anyone just yet. Nick Lardis will be a candidate if he can get his game back rolling; he has two goals and four assists in five games with the IceHogs. Gavin Hayes is someone to keep an eye on, too, with five goals and four assists in eight games.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) October 29, 2026 The NHL news cycle was overwhelmed with Red Wings buzz on Thursday before the game. First, the Wings announced Dylan Larkin wouldn’t play against the Blackhawks. Then, interim GM Shawn Horcoff said Larkin wouldn’t play for the Red Wings again until he’s traded. Then… yeah, it kept going… Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, released a statement that simply said “Dylan’s had enough of the situation. We believe he’s been very professional and cooperative through this process.” Finally, roughly two hours before puck drop, the Red Wings announced they are suspending their former captain without pay. What a mess!

— Kaitlyn Pohly (@KaitlynDPohly) October 29, 2026 The CHL announced the roster for the 2026 CHL USA Prospects Challenge, which is a showcase of top prospects heading into the 2027 NHL Draft. Václav Nestrašil had the primary assist on the only goal of the night for UMass last night. Samu Alalauri had the second apple on the same goal. Harvard upset the Minutemen 2-1. Before we get into tonight’s prospect slate, Ryan Roobroeck made a huge jump up my updated rankings of the Blackhawks’ top prospects (posted yesterday). Here he is talking about his season on the Guelph Storm’s “Eye of the Storm” Podcast. Good watch/listen.
