Long before she was the girl on fire, Jennifer Lawrence was a 20-year-old with one certainty about her future. When The Hunger Games came calling, she worried the role of a lifetime might put that dream at risk.
On the Oct. 28 episode of Call Her Daddy, Lawrence told host Alex Cooper what scared her most about saying yes to Katniss Everdeen. It wasn’t the book’s devoted fan base.
“What made me nervous was just the way I was afraid that it could negatively affect my acting career… and just like my personal life,” she said, “because like the one thing that I was always sure of when I was younger was like, I want to be a mom.”
The scale of the franchise made that fear feel real. “This just looks so different than like, doing some indies and like doing a film here. Like, this is huge,” she recalled. “’Cause Twilight had like just come out and everybody saw what that was. And so it was really just more like, how is this going to change my life and my acting career?”
Lawrence has said before that she nearly passed on the part because she wasn’t sure it was worth changing her life for. This time, she named what she was protecting. She also explained why she arrived on set confident. “I had taken the time. I thought about it before I said yes,” she said. “I asked them to give me a few days, and I thought about it.”

The life she worried about losing arrived anyway. “I wanted to be a mom for so long and, you know, didn’t find the right person and then I found the right person and then we were married,” she said. Lawrence married art gallerist Cooke Maroney in 2019. Their son Cy was born in 2022, and she welcomed their second child in 2025.
Motherhood has changed how she works. She said she had “never really needed structured time before.” “When you have kids,” she explained, “you have to be very mindful about what hours are spent where, what you’re going to do, and how, or you’re not going to get anything done, and you’re going to fail at both.” She added, “I’m really structured with my time now, which is just something that I never thought about or saw for myself.”
The franchise she once feared has now welcomed her back. On the same episode, Lawrence confirmed she reunited with Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, the first time the trio filmed together since Mockingjay Part 2 in 2015.
“It was so crazy because it was the same crew. It was the same camera guys, the same AD,” she said. “And Josh and Woody, and like, it was so emotional.” She added, “Josh and I like didn’t walk to the bathroom without our arms around each other.”
