ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Halloween will fall on a Saturday for the first time since 2020. As families across the Rochester area prepare for a busy night, police are preparing to keep the roads safe.
Somershire Drive, a neighborhood in Irondequoit where residents have created a tradition of decorating their lawns for Halloween, will be shut down to traffic on Saturday to keep trick-or-treaters safe. However, most neighbors will remain open to traffic.
Children ages 4 and 8 are 10 times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other night, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake spoke with Irondequoit Police Chief Scott Peters about how the department is preparing.
“We do have a lot of extra patrols or whatever full contingency of officers taking their calls for service, Peters said. “We are putting officers. We actually have three extra officers out there doing a stop DWI detail throughout the whole night. We’re also bringing in two extra officers so that we can concentrate on both sides of the town just in case there’s any hot spots that might pop up.”
Peters is urging parents to get glow necklaces or something to keep children visible and reminds drivers to slow down. He said families should cross at intersections and marked crosswalks and avoid walking between parked cars.
Safety for Halloween events in downtown
Thanks to leap years, Halloween will not fall on a Saturday again until 2037. That means Halloween coincides with some big Saturday night events in downtown Rochester, such as Upstate Fest, a concert headlined by artist Lil Baby, at the Blue Cross Arena. Kristi spoke with Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello about how RPD is preparing to keep people safe from traffic.
“There’s a lot of different events going on in the city as well. On Saturday night, there’s a big event at the Blue Cross Arena. We also have our bar district, the entertainment district down there at East and Alexander, as well as Monroe Avenue. We’re going to have extra patrols associated with all of those with our special events details, to make sure everybody at those high capacity spots stay safe,” Bello said.
Bello stressed the importance of making a plan to get home safely if you plan to drink, such as using a rideshare service.
State Police are also boosting traffic enforcement
New York State Police will also boost their traffic enforcement efforts through Halloween night. Halloween is one of the state’s several impaired driving and traffic safety crackdown periods: the others being the Super Bowl, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, late summer leading up to Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and mid-December through Christmas and New Year’s.
Police will be looking for impaired, speeding, or reckless drivers. Across the nation, at least 377 people were killed in crashes on Halloween night involving an impaired or drunk driver from 2019 to 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
During last year’s crackdown, state and local police issued over 44,500 citations, including 1,210 for impaired driving and 8,701 for speeding, according to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.
More details on Halloween traffic deaths
Pedestrian deaths on Halloween are 43% higher compared to any other night, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that looked at 42 years of data. That makes Halloween night one of the deadliest nights of the year for people walking.
