ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Brielle Murray, a fifth grader at Discovery Charter School in Rochester, is being honored for making a new student feel welcome last school year.
In December, a new student joined Brielle’s fourth-grade class, but language barriers made it hard for her to connect with other kids. Brielle noticed and took the initiative, playing with her new classmate and helping her with work. The two have remained friends ever since.
Her teacher says Brielle always makes an effort to make other students feel accepted. Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here. See past winners here.
