2026 U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials
October 28-31, 2026 Westmont, IL — FMC Natatorium SCM (25 Meters) Meet Central Selection Criteria Psych Sheets Live Results Live Stream Recaps Prelims: Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4 Finals: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 | Day 4The 2nd day of the 2026 United States SC World Trials is over, and the U.S. roster saw a lot of swimmers added on the second night of competition including Ilya Kharun. This is not Kharun’s first time making a United States international team, since he technically qualified for the 2022 Jr. Pan Pacific Championships before he was removed from the team after it was discovered he was not an American citizen.
That will not be the case this year, since Kharun officially became an American citizen in April of 2024, and in January of this year, he announced he would be changing his sporting nationality to the United States. Just a few days ago, Kharun’s year-long waiting period was over and he became officially eligible to represent the United States.
As a reminder, here is a simplified selection process:
The top-two finishers in each event will be selected to the team in that event—provided they’ve both hit the ‘A’ qualifying standard. If the winner of an event does not hit the ‘A’ qualifying time, but does hit the ‘B’ cut, the winner will qualify for the team in that event, but the 2nd-place finisher will not. If the winner of an event hits the ‘A’ qualifying time but the 2nd-place finisher does not, and the 2nd-place finisher has not achieved the ‘A’ cut at any sanctioned meet from July 27, 2025 through October 31, 2026, then only the winner in the event will be selected to the team and not the runner-up. Beyond individual selection, the top four finishers in the 100 and 200 freestyle will be named to the team, provided the roster doesn’t exceed capacity (see priorities below).Selection Priorities
The top two finishing swimmers in the 100 and 200 free The top finishing swimmer in every event other than the 100 and 200 free The 2nd finishing swimmer in every event other than the 100 and 200 free The 3rd finishing swimmer in the 100 free The 3rd finishing swimmer in the 200 free The 4th finishing swimmer in the 100 free The 4th finishing swimmer in the 200 freeThe United States roster is capped at 40 swimmers total — 20 men and 20 women.
If the roster exceeds capacity after adding all Priority 2 swimmers, then swimmers will be added to the team in order of the highest percentage difference of the ‘A’ standard in the event in which they qualified.
Night Two Selections
There were 21 total athletes who earned new priority designations on night two of competition. There is a chance that not all 21 will make the official team. The women’s roster currently sits at 11 athletes and the men’s roster sits at 12 with two days left of competition.
All the winners and runner-up finishers came in under the AQUA ‘A’ times tonight, which means each event has the potential to have two athletes qualify. All the winners will fall under priority 2 while all the athletes who finished 2nd will be priority 3.
Katharine Berkoff and Van Mathias both set new world records en route to their qualifications with Berkoff swimming 25.21 in the women’s 50 backstroke and Van Mathias swimming 55.14 to win the men’s 100 breaststroke.
Another big name to likely make the team tonight was Caeleb Dressel, who won the men’s 50 free and 100 IM to pick up his first international Team USA roster spot since the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
