After appearing in more than 100 films, John Leguizamo calls his role in The Odyssey the “apex” of his career.
The Emmy and Tony Award winner portrays Eumaeus, a blind swineherd and slave to the title character, Odysseus, played by Matt Damon.
“It’s not just that it’s such a large movie,” Leguizamo told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday, October 27. “It’s also that it’s a work of art. It feels like it’s one of those movies that belongs to part of cinema history that people will be studying hundreds of years from now.”
Leguizamo joined an all-star ensemble cast in Christopher Nolan’s epic film, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. He believes the film will be known as a true classic.
“Just because of the work that Chris Nolan did and the beautiful script, the detail to bring it to life,” he continued. “This incredible cast, the work of every actor, is unparalleled.”
The Odyssey has earned over $1.8 billion worldwide, making it the 11th highest-grossing film of all time.
Since beginning his career as a stand-up comedian in New York City in 1984, Leguizamo has appeared in several high-profile films, including John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, and Die Hard 2. However, he says nothing has compared to the impact of The Odyssey.
“It’s changed my life. It’s totally changed my life,” he said. “This is the highlight of my life. I don’t think I’ll ever make a movie of this import again. Hopefully I will, but it seems like this is the apex of my life.”
Now he’s in more demand than ever, with ten upcoming projects on his schedule. He’s currently shooting Miami Vice ’85 with Michael B. Jordan, 40 years after he made his television debut in the original Miami Vice series in 1986.
Leguizamo is also one of the voices of the Ice Age animated films and is returning for the sixth installment of the franchise, Ice Age: Boiling Point, being released February 5, 2027.
He was recently recognized for his longevity, receiving a Career Achievement Award at The Celebration of Cinema and Television awards ceremony on October 2 in Los Angeles.
