Jeffery Simmons Trade Thoughts, Immediate Impact, Winners and Losers, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

GOOD MORNING! The Bears are trading for Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. Our initial post is here. We discuss more below.

Bears General Manager Ryan Poles is going all-in on a quarterback who is on a rookie-scale deal by taking a big swing on the best-available impact defensive lineman. This is what it’s all about, folks! For all the virtual ink spilled about what it looks like to take advantage of a QB on a rookie deal, this is what it looks like. I don’t know what the future holds, but this is a big deal, and the GM deserves his flowers for pushing his chips into the middle of the table. From the jump, sending two first-round picks and a fourth-rounder to the Titans to get Jeffery Simmons out of Tennessee is a hefty price to pay. But in a world where you have to give something to get something, that is the cost of doing business. Simmons is a game-wrecking interior defensive lineman. The type of player the Bears needed to add to this team. I don’t think that type of player was going to be available via the 2027 NFL Draft or in free agency. So to jump on it via trade is gutsy. Kudos to Poles for making it happen. Some things you need to know about Jeffery Simmons: Pro Football Focus has him as the 12th-highest-graded interior defensive lineman. His 80.5 pass rush grade is fifth-best among 126 interior DL qualifiers, while his 70.0 run defense grade is 16th best among his peers. ESPN’s Pass Rush Win Rate metric has Simmons as the best in the business. That guy gets into the backfield like it’s nobody’s business.

The big winners here: Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen, defensive ends Montez Sweat and Austin Booker, defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, and fans who have been clamoring for this front office to make a big, splashy move that could potentially alter the trajectory of this franchise. The big losers here: Interior offensive linemen on other teams, opposing offensive coordinators, quarterbacks who drop back in obvious passing downs, running backs who have to stare right into the eyes of a 6-foot-4-inch, 305-pound four-time Pro Bowler coming off an All-Pro 2025 campaign. While I was cooking up BN Bears Bullets, my friend Adam chimed in to let me know that Montez Sweat and Jeffery Simmons were teammates at Mississippi State. That’s fun. I love a reunion story. Getting it on the defensive line with Sweat and Simmons a few months after seeing the Bears reunited Joe Thuney and Garrett Bradbury (they were teammates at North Carolina State) is a fun 2026 side plot. Jeffery Simmons, who has been traded to the Bears, enters the field before the game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026. DENNY SIMMONS / THE TENNESSEAN / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images I’ll try to carve out some time later today to hash out what some Bears defensive line rotations will look like now that Simmons is on his way. It feels important to note that Jeffery Simmons has played on 87 percent of the Titans’ defensive snaps. He has been at 80 percent or more in every season since 2020. So in addition to being good, he is also durable. We know how much this coaching staff values availability, so we shouldn’t just look past this as if it isn’t consequential. One player who stands to benefit a ton from the Jeffery Simmons trade is Austin Booker. I’ve noticed how much better Booker plays when Montez Sweat is on the field with him. Now, I’m curious to see how he plays when he has Sweat and Simmons on the line with him. It could also be fun to see how Grady Jarrett looks with an impact defensive tackle next to him. After seeing what a motivated Dayo Odeyingbo looks like rushing from the interior of the defensive line, I look forward to seeing what he looks like (after his stint on IR is done) next to Simmons in clear passing downs. This Bears defense just got fun. One year after trading to acquire a pair of offensive linemen who brought stability and filled an obvious need, it feels right that the defensive line gets their interior stabilizer. I know we’ve discussed Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s desire to win in the trenches from the offensive side of things. But let’s not lose sight of the defensive side of the line of scrimmage. I’m looking forward to seeing details of how this deal came about. Keep in mind that the Bears and Titans had joint practice sessions together back in August, so Chicago’s coaching staff and front office got a good look at Jeffery Simmons this summer. Also worth pointing out is that Bears GM Ryan Poles and Titans lead exec Mike Borgonzi worked together with the Kansas City Chiefs. Sometimes, who you know is as important as what you know. Are the Bears done trading? They shouldn’t be. You don’t have to work hard to build a case that this team needs help at defensive end and cornerback. Depending on how they feel about Coby Bryant’s recovery process, safety could be a need, too. Part of me wonders if they’ll try to swing a trade to bolster their tight ends room. We can expand on these thoughts in a later post. More from The Athletic, Tribune, Sun-Times, and ESPN.
