This Jesse Rogers tweet is making the rounds as “the report” that Clay Holmes and Matthew Boyd have officially hit free agency. I’m not sure that’s precisely what Rogers was saying, but it kinda doesn’t matter, because the options decisions on these guys ARE going to happen today or tomorrow or this weekend. So let’s just call it today.
Cubs off season will be busy on the mound. Clay Holmes and Matthew Boyd are turning down their player options to become free agents. Shota Imanaga, Kevin Gausman and David Peterson are FA’s as well. Have to rebuild the staff. Guess is 1-2 of above could return.
— Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) October 29, 2026Rogers might be reporting that these decisions have been made, or he might be saying the decisions are obviously forthcoming. Either way, he’s right, and the outcome is the same: a very empty rotation!
Boyd’s was actually a mutual option at $15 million ($2 million buyout), which we always know is not being picked up by one side or the other. Holmes’ was a $12 million player option (no buyout), and it was clear he could do much better in free agency. So there are no surprises here, just logistical formalities.
As for what the Cubs do with their suddenly barren rotation, well, that’s pretty much 90% of the question for the offseason. Bringing back either Holmes or Boyd is a plausible part of the answer, though even if the Cubs brought back both, they’d need another starter to join them.
As of today, the Cubs have lost the following starting pitchers to free agency: Clay Holmes, Matthew Boyd, Kevin Gausman, Shota Imanaga, and David Peterson. Colin Rea could follow soon if the Cubs don’t pick up his option.
Meanwhile, the returning starting pitchers are Cade Horton (out until at least August), Justin Steele (no idea what he’ll contribute), Ben Brown (no idea if he’ll keep starting), Edward Cabrera (no idea if he’ll be good), Javier Assad (is he The Ace now? lol), and Braxton Garrett (does he even make the team?).
