If you love video games that let you escape into beautiful, imaginative worlds, there’s a gorgeous adventure coming to Nintendo Switch 2 that might deserve a spot on your must-play list.
Sword of the Sea, an atmospheric adventure game from independent developer Giant Squid, is launching on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S on Oct. 29, 2026. The game was previously released on PlayStation 5 and PC, but now a whole new group of players will have the chance to explore its stunning landscapes, surf across waves of sand and water, and bring a lost ocean back to life.
Players explore a breathtaking underwater world filled with colorful marine life, ancient ruins and mysterious creatures in Sword of the Sea.Sword of the Sea / Giant Squid
Announced during Nintendo’s Oct. 28 Indie World Showcase, the game combines the thrill of surfing with the exploration of a mysterious world filled with ancient ruins, sandy deserts and shimmering oceans.
Instead of a traditional surfboard, players use something called a Hoversword, which combines the movement of a skateboard, snowboard and surfboard. Players can build momentum, catch air off enormous waves, and perform flips, spins and other tricks as they travel through the game’s ever-changing landscapes.
But there’s more to Sword of the Sea than surfing.
Players take on the role of the Wraith, a mysterious figure resurrected in a place called the Necropolis. Their mission is to uncover an ancient sea buried beneath the land and restore life to a world that has lost its oceans.

As players explore, they can transform sandy dunes into glittering turquoise waters, bringing schools of colorful fish and other marine life back to the environment. Along the way, they’ll discover hidden areas, explore ancient ruins and encounter secrets lurking beneath the waves.
The game’s striking visual style comes from creative director Matt Nava, whose previous work includes ABZÛ, The Pathless and Journey. Its soundtrack was composed by Grammy Award-winning composer Austin Wintory, who also worked on those games.
According to Giant Squid, the game is designed to combine exhilarating movement with a more meditative experience, allowing players to enjoy the beauty of the world as they explore.
Sword of the Sea launches on Nintendo Switch 2 ($29.99) and Xbox Series X|S ($29.99) on Thursday, Oct. 29. It’s already available on PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
