Carson Kressley was willing to go to some pretty extreme lengths to pay off his farm—even if it meant chowing down on a scorpion.
The Queer Eye for the Straight Guy star recently revealed that he signed up for I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! for the money, only to find himself eating the predatory arachnid and taking on a series of wild challenges.
Speaking on the You’re the Shift podcast, Kressley explained that he wasn’t initially convinced the reality competition would be a good fit. Instead, he decided to name his price, figuring the show’s producers would never agree to it. To his surprise, they did.
Kressley ultimately traveled to South Africa to compete, despite having never watched the show before. He also admitted that he didn’t want to know what he was getting himself into.
View this post on Instagram“I didn’t want to know what they were going to have me do, and it was the Australian version, so I was like, ‘Oh, no one at home is going to see this. I won’t look totally desperate,'” he said. “And because Australia has big spiders and scary snakes, they don’t even film it in Australia. They film it in Africa in the jungle where it can be even probably more dangerous and bugs and animals that can kill you.”
He continued, “So I shipped off to South Africa, and we lived in a tent, and I literally ate a scorpion. I reverse bungee jumped, where they tie you to a big piece of ballast and you have a harness on. There’s a clip in the back, a clip in the front, and then they unclipped the back and then the bungee cord would just hike by a crane, like in the air.”
For Kressley, the decision came down to a practical goal: paying off his farm. But the opportunity required him to eat a scorpion, endure an extreme bungee-jumping challenge, and live in a tent while filming in the South African jungle. It was a far cry from his usual role as a fashion expert and television personality.
Kressley’s willingness to take chances extends beyond reality TV. During the interview, he described having what he calls “reverse imposter syndrome,” explaining that he sometimes says yes to opportunities even when he isn’t sure he’s qualified for them, then figures things out as he goes. That mindset has helped him embrace experiences he might otherwise have passed up.
