From the moment that the first Hunger Games book was released in 2008, there was a heated fan debate about Katniss Everdeen’s two love interests, Gale and Peeta. Some readers were “Team Gale,” and others were “Team Peeta,” not unlike the “Team Jacob” and “Team Edward” divide in Twilight.
However, once the books concluded with Mockingjay and all four original movies came out, there was a clear shift towards Peeta, as it was ultimately revealed that Gale was at least partially responsible for the death of Katniss’s little sister, Prim (leading to the viral trend of calling Gale the “Prim Reaper,” which is fairly horrifying).
There has, in fact, become a major push against Gale within the larger Hunger Games fanbase over the years, and that only makes it all the more shocking that Katniss Everdeen actress and Hunger Games fan favorite Jennifer Lawrence has just confirmed where she falls on the Peeta versus Gale schism—and it’s not the side many fans are going to be happy about.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence specifically said, “I was Team Gale, even after he killed my sister.” Although she didn’t elaborate, it also didn’t seem like she was joking, and this is no doubt going to ruffle some major feathers within the fanbase.
In the comments of the Call Her Daddy YouTube video of the interview, there are already signs of some of that potential backlash, with one commenter writing, “I will always love Jennifer Lawrence, she is so funny and such a vibe! But gurl, Team Gale, really?” Another comment says, “It hurts that they’re team Gale,” and yet another reads, “No way! Team Peeta all day!”
However, any frustration with Lawrence within this fanbase is likely to be short-lived, given her other major Hunger Games update in the interview. Namely, Lawrence officially confirmed her appearance in the upcoming movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and spoke at length about what it was like to reunite with Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson on set, calling it “unbelievable” and “so emotional.”
Luckily for fans, waiting to see that reunion is almost over, as Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters on Nov. 20.
