Born Dolores Clara Fernandez on April 10, 1930, Huerta devoted her life to improving working conditions and supporting the rights of historically marginalized communities. She is credited with coining the now-iconic rallying cry, “Sí, se puede,” which translates to “Yes, you can.”

In 1965, she joined the Filipino grape pickers picketing in the five-year “Delano Grape Strike.” She also co-founded the United Farm Workers union alongside activist César Chávez. She later accused Chávez, who died in 1993, of sexually abusing her in the 1960s, resulting in the birth of two children.

For her decades of work as a labor leader, civil rights icon, and feminist activist, Barack Obama awarded Huerta the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. She was also the first Latina inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.

Her work and achievements as an activist are chronicled in the 2025 documentary, Seeds of Change: The Life and Legacy of Dolores Huerta.

“I hope that my legacy will be one of an organizer that organized to fight injustice,” Huerta said in the film. “We want to give our children an inheritance of justice, right, not jewels or property or money because they’ll just fight over it. So the main thing to do is to give them this love for justice — and that is the greatest gift I think that any of us can have.”
