1974 Texas Cult Classic Named ‘Scariest Horror Film Scream’ After Launching a $250 Million Franchise ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

It wouldn’t be Halloween without a few screams.

From the genre-defining performances of Jamie Lee Curtis to the unsettling intensity of Mia Goth, horror films have given us plenty of reasons to hide behind the sofa.

But which horror film scream is the most iconic?

To find out, experts at Alpine Hearing Protection recently analyzed some of cinema’s most memorable screams — examining their loudness, RMS levels, audio spikes and vocal tremble to discover which scream comes out on top. The company unveiled its findings on Wednesday, October 28.

The top spot with an Iconic Scream Score of 8.354/10 is a 50-year throwback: Marilyn Burns’ performance in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, proving that some horror screams stand the test of time. Her scream recorded 17 audio spikes, indicating repeated sharp changes in the sound’s intensity, alongside 2.5 seconds of sustained high RMS levels (which measures the average energy of an audio signal over time, helping identify how long a scream maintains a high level of intensity).

As fans well know, this 1974 slasher spawned a whole franchise of sequels, spinoffs and reboot films, including the Jessica Biel starrer of the same name that hit theaters nearly 30 years later. Collectively, the movies have made made $252 million globally, according to the Texas State Historical Association.

But back to the “scariest screams” list. Coming a close second with a score of 8.256/10 was Florence Pugh’s shriek in Midsommar, which stood out for its high perceived loudness and 17 audio spikes.

Making the top three is Drew Barrymore’s iconic performance in Scream scored 8.254/10, narrowly behind Pugh, 30, in second. Her scream recorded 14 audio spikes and the highest treble energy of the top three, at 0.32 — treble energy measures the proportion of high-frequency content in a sound, which can contribute to its sharp, piercing quality.

Narrowly missing out on a place in the top 10 are Jenna Ortega’s chilling scream in X (2022) and Maika Monroe’s memorable scream in It Follows, exemplifying the wide variety having left their mark.
